ST. PHILOMENA’S COLLEGE

ANNUAL PRIZE GIVING The annual break-up ceremony and distribution of prizes of St. Philomena’s College wag held on Friday evening, when there was a large attendance of parents and friends of the pupils. Bishop Whyte presided and presented the prizes, and Monsignor Delany and Fathers M'Devitt and Loughnan were also present. The proceedings opened with the following delightful programme:—Four-part song, “A Farmer’s Song” (White), college choir; pianoforte duet, “ Danse Carnavalesque” (Jules Devaux), Ellen Heriihy and Margaret Moore; vocal solo, “I Hear a Thrush at Eve/’ Margaret O'Connell; physical drill, senior pupils; vocal solo. “Flower Song” (Faust), Bridge Herlihy; pianoforte .duet, Hungarian Dance No. 5, Elizabeth Heyes and Kathleen Halpin; vocal duet, “Thanks be to God” (Stanley Dickson), Bridge Herlihy and Margaret O’Connell; unison song, “England” (Hubert Parry); part song, “The Call of the Moon Children ” (Armstrong Gibbs), college choir. After the reading of the annual report and the distribution of prizes, the bishop addressed those present. He first congratulated the girls on the excellence of the programme they had presented, and expressed, the pleasure he had felt when he had heard the choir perform so successfully at the competitions. He also congratulated the pupils on their successes of the year in the various departments, as well as the numerous prize-winners. His pleasure at lieing present on such a happy occasion was all the greater because of the fact that Monsignor Delany was once again in their midst, and he extended to him a hearty welcome. The .bishop con-, eluded by wishing all present a happy Christmas and a bright New Year. Monsignor Delany first thanked the bishop for the welcome extended to him, and said that it gave him very. great pleasure to be present. Although he had not witnessed any such gatherings of children during the course of his recent travels, still, he had visited in Iceland many, places of deep interest to the sisters and the pupils of St. Philomena’s. He likewise congratulated the students on their successful year’s work, and expressed the hope that the majority would return to school in 1936 after having enjoyed their lyell-earned holiday. Fathers M'Devitt and Loughnan added their congratulations and good wishes, expressing the hope that all would benefit by the holidays then commencing.
