A crooner is “not a singer; he is a disease,” declared Sir Richard Terry, the composer, addressing boy competitors during the second day of Blackpool’s music festival last month. “ You have your choice whether to grow up into a man or a crooner. You cannot be both,” he said. Sir Richard was adjudicating solo singing from which the piece was “ The Lass With the Delicate Air,” when he asked how many boys knew what the theme of the song was. One blushingly said it was about a man in love with a stubborn girl. “If you had been a crooner you would have invited her to wipe her boots on you,” said Sir Richard, and cried, ‘ Oh, cutic, why are you so hard on me?’”
