ROWING
OTAGO CLUB’S RACE The Otago Rowing Club’s Wilson Foul’s race for regatta crews was held on Saturday afternoon over a two-mlle course from the Cove, finishing in the harbour basin. The water conditions were good, although a steady rain throughout the afternoon made matters uncomfortable for tho oarsmen. ' From a good start the Maiden No. 1 crew took the lead, and after half a mile had been covered was still leading, with the Seniors, Juniors and Youths on even terms following and the Maidens No. 2 dropping back. At the mile mark the Maidens No. 1, who were swinging along nicely, were about a length in the lead, followed in order by the Seniors, the Juniors, the Youths, and the Maidens No. 2. The race then resolved itself into a duel between the Maidens No. 1 and the Seniors, the latter gradually drawing up until they were level a quarter of a mile from home. At the entrance to the basin the Seniors were leading by about two and a-half lengths, and they passed the finishing line three lengths in the lead. There was a very close finish between the. Juniors and Youths for third place. On the time handicaps allotted the crews the Maidens No. 1 won by four seconds from the Youths, followed by the Seniors, Juniors, and Maidens No. 2.
The crews were as follows: —Maidens No. 1; Petrie (str), Davidson, Finch, Jack. Youths : Lysaght (str), Love, Milburn, Le Sueur. Seniors: Binnie (str), Johnson, Brown, Henry. Juniors; Barclay (str), Caradus, Johnston, Grant. Maidens No. 2: White (str), Buxton, Williams, and Cruickshanks.
