MANIOTOTO SHOW

: { t RECORD ENTRIES FORWARD I 0 f IXTURE : ’ | The fortieth annual show of the Maniototo Agricultural and Pastoral Association * wa« held at Ranfurly on Friday in dull i but fine weather. Entries and patronage r were both ' /considerably better than last; ■ year, and the fixture was regarded by many as the most successful ever held by ' the association. - ; ■ In every section entries showed an .increase bver\last year's figures, and in practically every section ,the competition was 4 keen. There were 150 sheep; entries for- '• ward compared with 110 last year, 75 draughts compared with 32, ‘ 125 hackneys against 105, and 44 cattle against 40. The gate receipts also constituted a record, totalling £41,. compared with £34 last 1 year. ' , ■. ■ .■ ; "••• 1 .SHEEP The judge of the \fat sheep expressed . himself as being extremely- pleased with \ the entries = generally. The halfbred 1: wethers were good sheep and would have been worthy of a prize in keen competi- ; tion. It was unfortunate that there was no competition. The three pens exhibited by Mr G. Laws were outstanding sheep. 2 The heaviest pen secured the first prize, the others not being so well matched. The class for freezers was not a good one. The first prize pen was a little on the heavy side, and the others, though lighter, were not so well matched. All the placed sheep in the fat ewe class were .outstanding. Mr. G. Law gaining the first prize with a nice entry. The fat lambs under 801 b (excluding Downs) produced good competition, Messrs J. M'Leod and Sons winning with an entry of exceptional quality, all being good freezing weights. Mr A. Helm’s entry, which took second ? place, was a shade heavier and not so : even. One pen of good lambs was disqualified for going over the weight limit. The Downs lambs under 801 b were good, . i; Mr G. MTntosh winning the competition ■ with, a pen of excellent quality. They were very evenly matched, and all showed good conformation. The fat lambs under 70lb formed the strongest class in the show, both numerically and from the point of view of quality. Mr G. MTntosh’s pen, which won the competition, included j outstanding lambs, and Mr S. C. Greer’s pen was also of exceptional quality. There was very little to choose between the three placed pens, and another entry which would have been well placed had to be disqualified under the weight limitation. The class for lambs, any weight, was also remarkable, Mr Helm’s entry, which took first prize, consisting of lambs which were amongst the best shown this season."' Mr C. White took the bulk of the honours in the Romney Marsh classes. He had 10 entries, and they would all have merited attention, even in keen competition. This exhibitor’s champion ram was a good animal, though its wool showed a little loose on the rump, and his champion ewe had a very nice crimp in the wool. There was no competition in the Downs classes, Mr J. Mulholland taking the championship with a ram which was true to type and presented in good order. The Corriedale championship went to Mr G. Law, with Mr D. M'Knight close up in the ram class. Mr M'Knight also showed good ram hoggets. Mr Law was also successful with the pair of ewe hoggets arid the pair of ram hoggets. There was good competition in the halfbred classes,"Mr W. G. Thompson gaining the ewe championship with an outstanding entry., , HORSES In the draught section, males were more numerous than usual, but from the point of view of quality failed to reach a very high standard. The females, however, were good, the brood mares being an especially fine selection. Mr A. Cleugh’s champion mare was a fine, strapping beast which, the judge said, should be heard of again. She was a fine tvpe of animal, and showed excellent breeding. The entries were, for the most part, below standard, but were shown well. The younger colt* provided a good display and were well in advance of the aged entries. Messrs J- M’Leod and Son’s colt, which the judge placed next to the champion, would have been a better entry than the ribbon winner had its hooves compared more favourably with those of the champion. Competition in the hackney classes was very keen. Women’s backs were well up 'to standard, and would compare favourably with those in other shows. All the classes were well supported, and the

winning hack was an exceptionally good type. Mr J. Andrew’s champion hack was a good stamp of horse, and was well worthy of the honour. CATTLE The great improvement in the cattle classes during the past four years was commented on by the judge, who said that the entries had increased considerably and the quality _was .remarkably good. The principal class was milking Shorthorns, which were shown in excellent condition. There wa s only one bull forward, but it was a very good animal and was worthy of a first prize. The females generally were excellent, showing breeding and fine quality. The Jerseys were good exhibits arid attained a surprisingly high standard considering this was not a dairying district. The most outstanding animal was Mr G. Weir’s champion cow, which was a" well-developed animal. The other cattle classes were poorly.supported, but the animals sent forward, were good. In the fat cattle classes the cows-showed nice quality and evenness of flesh. „ ■> -The chief prize of the day. the association’s cup for ■ most points in all sections except sporting events was won by Messrs J, M'Leod and Sons. 4 ■ PRIZE LIST i The following is the prize-list:— SHEEP Judge: Mr G, Ross (Palmerston).
