OTAGO EARLY SETTLERS
MONTHLY MEETING OF i ' COMMITTEE The monthly meeting of the committee of the Otago Early Settlers' Association ,wes held yesterday afternoon. There were present: Messrs D. J. Calder (president, in the chair), F. W. Knight, W. Micolson, E. Webster, E. C. Hazlett, C. Morris, W. H. Ferens, R. S. J. A. Macdonald, J. Hope, H. Baron, C. C. Robertson, A..F. Cheyne, W. J. Strong and F. H. Campbell. The president reported that Messrs Loan and Watson, contractors for alterations to the Pioneers' Hall, had started the work, and hoped to have same completed early in March. The president read the report of the sub-committee in connection with the proposed school essay competition on " Early History of Otago." It was-suggested that the competition be held among the (1) primarv schools of Dunedin, (2) primary schools of Otago. (3) secondary schools in Dunedin, including Mosgiel and Port Chalmers, (4) all other district high schools. After discussion, it was resolved to hold the matter over until next meeting of the committee for further consideration. ' The president reported that two large brass door plates had been presented to the association by an anonymous donor. The following gifts were received and votes of thanks were passed to the donors: —

Gibson, Maori Hill—Photos of herself and late husband, Captain Matthew Gibson, Robert Henderson, 1868; also large oil painting of ship Jessie Readman.
P. George, St. Kilda —Samples of goldbearing quartz belonging to his late father, Walter George, of Kyeburn Diggings, arrived early 1860's; also sword and bayonet used by the armed constabulary in the engagement against the Eauhau Pa, Te Ngutu-te manu, 1868-59. Owned by Trooper Joseph Spedding. •Dr R. Hogg, Invercargill—Framed enlarged portrait of his late father, James Hogg, Dunedin, arrived 1861..
John Robb. South Dunedin—Model of full-rigged sailing ship. Miss A. Duncan. Dunedin—Two photo groups of football teams —Dunedin first fifteen, 1885, and New Zealand first fifteen, 1884.
Mrs W. G. Leckie, Wyndham—Framed portraits of her late parents, Mr and Mrs James Farquharson, Dunedin, Wave Queen, 1863; also group of four generations.
James A. Brown, Ranfurly—An interesting collection of photographs of early Oamaru.
From the estate of the late John Edgar, Tapanui (per Mrs Edgar, jun!)— Portrait of the late Rev. Dr Stuart, " Bosworth," 1860; also framed copies of the Pink and White Terraces and Mount Tarawera in eruption, 1886.
