Caselberg, Hawera branch manager of the Farmers' Co-operative, has been appointed (says a Press Association telegram) supervising valuer in the North Island for the Mortgage Corporation. He will assume his duties at the end of February. A Press Association cable message from Sydney states that the Lord Mayor for 1930 is Alderman Archibald Howie, a prominent business man, 56 years of age. He was elected yesterday. Mr G. R. Milward, who has been actingchief engineer of the Southland County Council, was yesterday appointed to act permanently in that capacity (says a Press Association telegram from Invercargill), and Mr B. C. Basstian, who has been long associated with the county as chief engineer, will take over certain special engineering works. A Press Association telegram from Christchurch states that Professor R. E. Alexander, director of the Canterbury Agricultural College, Lincoln, has been granted leave of absence for the whole of 1936. Dr F. W. Hilgendorf. who recently resigned from the staff of the college, has consented, at the request of the board, to take over the directorship for next year. The decision to grant Professor Alexander leave of absence was made at a meeting of the Board of Governors in committee yesterday. At a meeting some months ago the board decided to terminate Professor Alexander's engagement as from the end of 1 936 - " . , t. Mr G. H. Holford, B.Sc, Agric, has this year been awarded the Bledisloe medal, which is within the award of the Board of Governors of Canterbury Agricultural College. This announcement (a Press Association telegram says) was made at a meeting of the board yesterday. A graduate of Lincoln College, Mt Holford has taken a prominent part T in the development of agriculture in New Zealand. He will shortly leave Christchurch for the North Island, and many tributes have been paid to his. pioneering work in experimental irrigation in the province. For 17 years Mr Holford was chairman of the Rural Education and Agricultural Development Committee of the Canterbury Progress League. He formed the Soil Improvement Committee that led to the present scheme of fertiliser and crop improvements by the Department of Agriculture and research institutions. It was decided at last 'evening's meeting of the Otago Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association to forward the name of Mr E. C. Isaacs to the New Zealand Olympic Association for nomination as manager of the New Zealand Olympic team. The president (Mr Guy Tapley) remarked that he knew of no man more suitable for the position. At the monthlv meeting of the Otago Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association held last evening a presentation was made to Mr W. H. Masters, treasurer of the centre, in view of his forthcomimr marriage. On behalf of the Otago Centre Mr Tapley presented Mr Masters with a handsome dinner set, and made reference to the esteem in which he was held. Mr C. W. Clark also spoke, wishing Mr Masters every success, and Mr Masters suitably replied.
