CLUTHA SHOW

INCREASED ENTRIES RECEIVED GOOD DISPLAY OF SHEEP The Clutha and Matau Agricultural and Pastoral Society's sixty-ninth annual show opened at Balclutha yesterday, and, in many respects, the display of stock is better than it has been for some time, the entries this year total 936, compared with 801 last year, every section, with the exception of sheep and pigs, showinß a slight improvement. The feature of the show, however, is the fine condition of most of the stock, which is of a much better quality this year than Last, This is due mainly to the good season which has been experienced in South Otago. Pastures have responded well to the recent rains, and consequently there is an abundance of greea feed in the district, which is looking better now than for some months, '? MoBt > sections have drawn fairly keen competition this year, there being a noticeable improvement among the cattle. The display of both light and draught horses, too, is considerably better. The judging yesterday was confined to sheep, dogjj, butter and cooking, and the horse, cattle and pig awards will be made today. SHEEP Although smaller in number than last year, through the absence of two prominent breeders who have been consistent exhibitors at the show for some years, the sheep make- a particularly fine display, for what the section lacks in numbers is more than compensated for by quality. Probably the most popular breed in South Otago is the Romney Marsh, which again supplies the main attraction, and although competition in certain classes in the natural condition section is limited, taken all round they are a splendid lot and typical Eomney type. The champion ram which is exhibited by Mr Adam King, of Stony Creek, is a fine sheep, carrying an exceptionally dence and even ileece, and the reserve champion, which is the property of the same exhibitor, shows little inferiority to the champion. The shorn ram class probably is the strongest, all the sheep being of an even type. The entry of ewes is small, but the sheep are all of good type and well up to standard. The champion ewe and the reserve champion are also shown'by Mr Kingj and there is very little difference lit' these two sheep. Both are good in the wool, but the championship winner is iht dined to be a little better in the body than the other sheep.

CROSSBREDS The crossbreds are a creditable lot, and the awards in this section were fairly -well distributed. Generally speaking, the wool is in first-class condition, and the ' majority of the sheep are well brought out and in ereat fettle. Mr A. W. Pannett. of Clinton, was again one of the most successful exhibitors of crossbreds, and Mr James Lory (Balclutha). Fleming Bros. (Kelso), and James Robertson, and Sons (Waikoikoi) shared quite a number of the awards. CORRIEDALES The Corriedale display is one of _ the finest'seen at Balclutha for a lons time, but competition is confined entirely to three studs, the Bushey Park Estate scooping the pool for both rams and ewes. The judge of this section was Mr J. A. Edwards, of Otikerama, and he described the sheep as the best he has ever had the pleasure of judging. He awarded both the ram and the ewe championships to the Bushey Park stud, the champion ram, which was first in his class and reserve champion at the Royal Show, being judgeu superior to the aged ram, which was awarded the champion ribbon at the Royal. A particularly fine ram hogget which gained a place in a big class at the Christchurch Show, was awarded first in its class at Balclutha. The ewe cham-: pionship was awarded to the sheep which; gained the reserve championship at the Christchurch. Show, and the.pick of the ewe hoggets was awarded a first at tHC Royal'Show. - - 1 V'■■>. SOUTHDOWNS As in other parts of New Zealand, much''greater interest is beingf taken m the Southdown'-breed in South' Otago than in the past, and this section provides one of the features of the sheep display. Here again competition ; is somewhat limited, Mr Pannett taking all the- awards, but nevertheless the standard of the exhibits shows a distinct improvement over previous years! The champion ram is a very good sheep, whih carries its age well, arid the other prize winners probably would be heard of in much keener competition than that experienced at Balclutha. &'-.-■ :. -. ■•'■'■ - ; BORDER LEICESTERS Of all the. -sheep exhibited there is only one breed which, perhaps, is not as well represented with quality as at some 'of the previous shows, and that is the Border Leicester. Competition in this section is confined to two breeders, Mr A. J. Christie, of Warepa, who lifted both the championships, and Mr H. Holgate, of Barnego. The sheep in this section are a. fair sample of the breed, although there was nothing outstanding. : BUTTER AND COOKERY It-is not many years ago that cookery classes at-A. and P. shows were unheard of, but to-day this section: is becoming one.of,the bigfest at most country shows throughout the South Island. The display at Balclutha is said to be the finest that has been seen there, as many as 24 entries being received for more than one class. The butter section also drew keen competition, most of the surrounding districts being represented. Yesterday's awards were as follows: —
