CALEDONIAN SOCIETY OF OTAGO
MEETING OF DIRECTORS The first general meeting of the directors of the Caledonian Society of Otago for the ensuing year was held on Thursday evening, a large attendance of board members being present. The president (Mr J. Hope) extended a welcome to the new members of the directorate, and expressed the opinion that the future outlook for the society was very bright. They, like other organisations, had to face various difficulties during recent years, but he still felt that the national spirit for Scottish games, dancing and athletics, still existed in the community and only required the necessary lead and opportune time of the year for holding these events to place the society again in the forefront and worthy of its traditions. The new members of the directorate, he said, were all gentlemen with experience; and he felt sure their assistance would materially help for improvement. Amongst the difficulties of the society was the loss in the membership roll through deaths and other causes. The decision of the previous board to launch a campaign for new members had proved a wise decision, and the result had exceeded expectations. At the end of the financial year the roll number was 128; to-day there were 235 members. He was confident that this would be greatly increased by the next meeting. " On the day of the annual meeting our treasurer and organiser, Mr Douglas, advised me," said Mr Hope, " that he required only a few more to complete his 100, and I think it is worthy of putting on record these few names he proposed that night:—Sir James Allen, K.C.8., M.L.C., ex-Minister of the Crown, Acting Prime Minister, Minister of Defence, war period Minister of Finance, High Commissioner for New Zealand in London ; Mr J. The president said he felt sure that, with the increased membership and brighter outlook, the new board of directors would enter with confidence upon its duties. The Caledonian Society, he said, possessed a worthy record of its foundation history in conjunction with the development of the province and the city, and he felt that the members could, with confidence, look forward for a new. life, with improvements and additional sports activities from the talent and influence available within the society's membership. Messrs W. E. C. Reid and Co. were appointed to the position of secretary to the society.
