PORT CHALMERS NEWS

RAILWAY STATION GARDEN The garden at the Port Chalmers Railway Station, which is always in the forerank of such gardens, is very attractive at the present time. Various species of flowers and shrubs are in bloom, and the general neatness of the lawns enhances the scene. The attractive manner in which the space set aside for the garden is kept all the year round reflects great credit on the staff. MARINE BAND PARADE The Port Chalmers Marine Band paraded on Thursday evening, and practised the quick-step march on the Recreation Ground at Mussel Bay. The evolutions and playing showed that the band has developed into a fine combination under Mr G. Paterson. The band afterwards practised contest music in the Garrison Hall, This morning the band will leave for Oamaru to take part in the contest to be held there to-day between bands from the North Otago, Otago, and Southland districts. The Port Chalmers Band will compete in the C Grade test selection and the quick-step selection, WATERFRONT WORK The waterfront has provided a fair amount of work for skilled and unskilled labour during the past few weeks. A large number of men were employed on the tanker Otokia while she was- undergoing overhaul, and boilermakers, fitters, engineers, and labourers are now engaged on the Timaru Harbour Board's dredge 350, which is undergoing annual overhaul. During the week several gangs of waterside workers were enployed discharging Home cargo from the steamer Port Hunter, the work occupying five days. Next week a fairly large number of waterside men will be employed in discharging London cargo from the motor ship Waipawa, which is expected to arrive at Port Chalmers to-morrow evening from London direct.
