SOLAR ACTIVITY
FIFTY-NINE SUNSPOTS OBSERVED MAXIMUM OP CYCLE APPROACHED. (Per United Pbess Association) WELLINGTON, November 15. It is a long time since so many spots have been observed together on the sun as were observed by the Dominion Observatory, Wellington, on . Wednesday. Mr I. L. Thomson, of the observatory staff, charted five distinct groups, two large ones and three smaller. There are 40 spots in one group, and nine, seven, two, and one in the others respectively, a total of 59 in all. It is common to find as many as 40, but a total of 59 is not often reached. The largest spot in the largest group is estimated by Mr Thomson to be 33,000 miles long, but the whole groups are much larger, about 115,000 miles in length. Mr Thomson considers that the maximum of the sun cycle is being approached, and the indications are that it will be rather a heavy one. The cycle has been working up .for about two yeais, and will probably be at its maximum in another two or three years.
