HOUSING SCHEME
TOWN PLANNING NECESSARY APPOINTMENT OF OFFICER RECOMMENDED The first report of the Housing and Town Planning Committee recently appointed by the City Council recommends that a town planning officer be appointed as soon as possible. The committee is of the opinion that a proper scheme of town planning is necessary in any housing reform and an officer is required to undertake this work. The report slates that the following have consented to give their services as co-opted members of the Housing and Town Planning Committee: —Dr C. E. Kerens, Dr T. M'Kibbin, Mr J. H. White (architect), Mr A. L. Salmond (architect), the city engineer and the town clerk. The committee has given preliminary consideration to the matter of housing and its co-related civic problems. The general aspect of these matters has been discussed fully with reference to the effect of recent legislation on the subject, and the methods which should be adopted to give effect to the instruction from the council, and the committee is of the opinion that the first essential of any proposal to deal with the housing problem is a proper scheme of town planning. The preparation of such a scheme will necessitate the appointment of a town planning officer, and the committee accordingly recommends that such an appointment be made at the earliest possible date.
