PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY MR BARTON BECOMES MODERATOR (Special to Daily Times; WELLINGTON, November 5. The General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand was opened in St. John's Church to-night, when the retiring moderator, the Rev. Principal Dickie, conducted the service. Preaching from Hebrews, chapter ii verse 12, on the meaning and purpose of the Church in the world, he stressed the fact that in the New Testament the term translated as " church" always meant a fellowship of Christian believers, whether gathered in a local group or considered from a world-wide view. Principal Dickie said the Church must make Christ's name adequately known to all. The Church must give articulate expression to what Christ meant to those who knew Him and must carry through to perfect fruition the work of winning the world for Christ.

Nominating the Rev. H. H. Barton for the moderatorship, Principal Dickie paiii a tribute to the work of the Rev. E. J. Tipler and Dr Gibb. Mr Barton delivered an address on "The Church Militant" to a large congregation. (A summary of the address will be found elsewhere in this issue.) The assembly set up a committee to confer with 'the IJome and Maori and Foreign Missions Committees on the proposals for the reorganisation of the mission work of the assembly.
