DUNEDIN SHAKESPEARE CLUB

A public reading of King Richard 111 will be given by the Dunedin Shakespeare Club in His Majesty's Theatre tomorrow evening. If the main theme of this play might be summed up in two words, they would be " merciless •ambition." Of all the great central figures of Shakespeare's plays,. Richard is the only one without any redeeming trai' 3; he is inhuman in his lust for power, his utter lack of feeling, his soulless cunning.'* He dominates the play, though against him is the figure of Queen 'Targaret, like a bird of doom. Her curse pervades its atmosphere and all except Richard are made to feel her preset 1 and to recognise in her the impersonated vengeance of natural law arising out of the Wars of the Roses. Deeply imbued with the gloom of fate, the whole play is one of dramatic power, and with the strong cast chosen, the reading should be intensely interesting. Those taking part are Messrs J. Fleming, F. J. Gair. H. W. Hunter, J. B. Flynn, M. Gaston, M. Joel. J. B. Quennell. and J. W. Hayward, Mrs H. Macmillan, Mrs E. J. Murray, Miss V. Jefferson. Miss I. MacRae, Miss N. Buswell, Miss L. Halo, and Mrs F. J. Gair. Mr John Kennedy will sing during the evening.
