HEWER SENTENCED
COMMENT BY COUNSEL WHOLE BRUNT OF THE OFFENCE. (Per United Press Association) * ■"' AUCKLAND, November 5. George Frederick Hewer was sentenced by Mr Justice Fair to two and a-half years' imprisonment, with hard labour, for unlawfully causing a noxious drug to be taken with intent. Counsel (Mr R. A. Singer) said it was to be remembered that the whole burden of the offence had been somewhat cruelly placed on the shoulders of Hewer. There were several self-con-fessed accomplices, among them two women who not only had been protected by the authorities, but whose names had been suppressed. The whole spirit of legal revenge was concentrated on Hewer. "The different opinions held by various sections of society as to the gravity of this class of offence must be disregarded by me," said the judge. " I must consider only the provisions of the Crimes Act.". His Honor said lie took into account that the prisoner had already been imprisoned for three months.
