WEST HARBOUR BOROUGH

MEETING OF COUNCIL The monthly meeting of the West Harbour Borough Council was held last evening, and was attended by the Mayor (Mr A. Smith) Crs J. Coutts, H. Davis, W. Forgie, F. W. Venn. J. L. Page, J. Robb and T. F. Rodger. CORRESPONDENCE. The borough engineer submitted a detailed report on the maintenance of the Dunedjn-Port Chalmers highway from July 1 to September .30. The total amount expended was £364 Is 3d, and the amount to be paid by the West Harbour Council was £44 16s 7d. A letter was received from Messrs W. A. Hunter and C. M'Ewan stating that the construction of Manuka street was long overdue. They complained that the road had not been extended to thenproperties. Another long-felt want was the provision of a street light near their property. The council was asked to give the matters referred to early attention.— The Mayor explained that the council had promised to improve the road, but as the grader was not available, nothing had been done. —Cr Robb said the two residents of Manuka street were not actually complaining about the road, but about the lack of convenience to their properties.— The Mayor said that the council could not do anything at the present time, but the road would receive attention when it was convenient.

A resident of Ellen street, # St. Leonards, wrote stating that a nuisance was being caused in the district through wandering stock. The council was asked to iake steps to prevent stock wandering on the footpaths and roads. —Cr Coutts said he had seen stock wandering about the roads, sometimes six and eight head. The position had now become serious, and it was time something was done.—The town clerk said complaints to the council about wandering stock were frequent, but the people who complained did not feel inclined to assist the council to take steps. He did not know who owned the cattle referred to in the letter.—Cr Forgie said cattle had wandered into his property, and he had informed the owner that it he did not keep them under control he would prosecute him. Such complaints as the one before the council were quite in order, but the people who complained should make an effort to assist the council. —lt was decided to leave the matter in the hands of \the inspector. REPORTS. The borough inspector submitted the following report:—During the month work had been continued in Clyde street, and was almost completed. The quarrying of stone had occupied considerable time. The drain at Woodhead's was expected to be completed this week. The streets had been cleaned and repairs carried out on the road leading to the Catholic Church. Work had been carried out in Ross street, Ravensbourne extension, Manuka street, District road. Hill street, and other places. The following work approved by the council remained to be completed:— Drains to be laid on the Main road at Sullivan's, Ascog road, and Burkes, and the drain at King's property. A wall had to be erected in the creek at Smith's property, a hand-rail in Burkes street and Ross street, new formation in Manuka street, repairs in Athol place, Grant, Shannon, Clyde streets, and District road (Roseneath). —The report was adopted.
