FORMER PUBLIC MAN SENTENCED REINSTATEMENT EFFORT FAILS. (Per United Press Association) AUCKLAND. November 4. Mr Justice Callan to-day sentenced John Edward Fitzgerald, aged 53, to four months’ imprisonment with hard labour for obtaining money by means of a false pretence. Counsel said that the accused was married, with 12 children. For 20 years he had been a member of the Wellington City Council, Harbour Board, and Education Board. Eleven years ago he was sentenced to five months' imprisonment for receiving. After he had served his sentence he was met by a numbe.r of citizens, including one who was now a judge of the Supreme Court, and given £2OO to start afresh. The judge said lie did not: share the prisoner's doubt that a mistake had been made invading him guilty.
