The Tarras branch held a successful second birthday party last Saturday in Shadrach’s Hall, which was decorated with coloured streamers and lilac. There was a large attendance. Mrs Aitkeu (president) welcomed visitors from neighbouring branches and received' congratulations. Mrs Smith (president, Cromwell) lit the candles on the birthday cake, and Mrs lleid (Luggate) put them out. Mrs Annan (president, Clyde) cut the cake and extended greetings to the branch. She also gave a short address on the aims and activities of the W.D.F.U., and touched briefly on the Health Camp Campaign and its need for financial support. Mrs Aitken thanked all who had helped to make the evening the success it was, and the function ended with a dance.
The monthly meeting of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union was held in Kurow on Saturday, Mrs Collins gave a demonstration on “ Covering Lamp Shades.” The decorated cake competition was won by Mrs T. Wilson, with Mrs Collins .second and Mrs Shaw third. Miss D. Jackson was first in the Junior Division. The hostesses were Mesdatnes Watkins, Small and Adams and Sister Smith.
The Cambrian-St. Bathans branch met on October 30 at < the residence of Mrs Shaw, Vinegar Flat. A competition, “An article not costing more than Is,’’ was won by Mrs Brown. Two other competitions were arranged during the afternoon, one being won by Mrs Mee, the other by Mrs Morgan. Hostesses were Mrs Shaw and Mrs Bush.
The Waikouaiti branch met on November 1, when Mrs Woods, in the absence of the president, presided. Mrs Denton Leech gave an address on the League of Nations and Abyssinia. At the dose of the address several questions were asked and answered, and a vote of thanKs was given the speaker on the motion of Mrs Woods. Mesdames C. Hallum, Graham, and Fay were hostesses.
The Hyde branch held its fourth birthday party in the Hyde Hall, when a large crowd attended. The evening took the form of a concert, items being given uy Mrs P. F. Kinney, Mrs Coster, Misses P. Kinney and C. Dowling. Messrs J. Milne and J. Curran, and concluded with a play and comic song. The vice-president, Mrs P. F. Kinney, then welcomed Mrs Drake and Miss Finlayson, of Dunedin, the members of the Macraes _ and Waipiata Institutes, and other visitors. In lighting the candles and cutting the cake, which was made for the occasion by Mrs Magon, Miss Finlayson and Mrs Drake gave suit able addresses on the activities of the Women’s Division. The Milburn-Clarendon branch met on Friday, November 1. A donation of 10s towards the children’s health camp collection was passed. The roll call was “A Summer Drink.” The competition, "A Pair of Slippers From an Old Felt Hat,” was won by Mrs _ Driver, The president gave a description of her trip through Paris, Mies Sophie Harland demonstrated on the making of a floral wreath, for which she was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. The hostesses were Mesdames Cullen, Fowler, and W. Hare.
