CRICKET

CARISBROOK v. ALBION

COLTS DEFEAT OLD BOYS GALLAND MAKES TOP SCORE FINE BOWLING BY CAMERON As there was no play on the first day. the cricket matches which were played oni Saturday had to be decided in a single afternoon. In two matches a decision was reached, the Colts securing the last Old Boys wicket on the call of time to win on the first innings by three runs, while University narrowly failed to obtain an outright win against Dunedin. The ■ other matches were drawn. The outstanding batting performance was that of Galland, who, in scoring 77 not out, was. mainly instrumental in enabling Grange to make a fine recovery against Kaikorai. Bell scored 52 for Carisbrook, and L. Smith showed good form to make 56 not out for Albion. There were several good bowling performances. Outstanding among them was that of Cameron, the slow bowler, who took six wickets for 18 and four for 16 for University against Dunedin, In the same match Henderson secured five for 23, and for Dunedin Douglas captured five for 38. The positions of the teams are now as follows: — Points.

GRANGE v. KAIKORAI 111-judged running between the wickets resulted in Grange making a bad start against Kaikorai, at the North Ground. In consequence of smart returns to the wicket by Burgess, the first three batsmen were run out, and, when Knight was caught behind the wickets, four were down for 17. Elmes, however, launched a vigorous attack on the bowling, and the total had reached 54 when Burgess once more returned smartly and Timms was the fourth batsman to be run out. When Elmes went after scoring 48, including seven 4’s, in 46 minutes, seven were down for 82. Then began a fine

partnership between Galland and Boyd, who put on 108 runs and were undefeated when Grange declared with a total of 190. Galland played a particularly fine inning? to score his 77 runs, which he made in 79 minutes, hitting a 6 and 11 4’s. Boyd was less aggressive, but was always sound in making his 37. The Kaikorai batsmen were left with only an hour and 35 minutes in which to bat, and they made no attempt to force the pace. • Against bowling that did not appear dangerous, Holden scored an attractive 42, and M'Gregor, going in when the game had been made safe, gave a bright display for 36. There were two further run-out decisions before stumps were drawn with Kaikorai’s score at 100 for four wickets. The match was drawn. Scores: — GRANGE. First Innings.

COLTS v. OLD BOYS CBlts -scored a five-point win in their match, again Old Boys on the _ No. ,2 Ground at Logan Park. Their innings produced 121, and Old Boys failed by . three runs to reach their score, the last . nian. Cherry, being clean bowled by Bad- ; cock right on time. Badcock was the ■ principal scorer- for Colts, making a fine ' 41 before he was bowled by Groves. * Wil- ' liaras, who was run out, was responsible for a nice knock which yielded 24. Lambert also batted well to get 14 before Dickinson took his wicket. Campbell, with a score of 11, was the only other ' Colts batsman to reach. double figures. Dickinson and Graham were Old Boys most successful bowlers, the former gettin" three wickets for 37 rune, while ' Graham finished with the fine figures of three for 10. At one stage of Old Boys ; innings it looked as if they were gonig to have no trouble in passing Colts 1 total. The tail, however, went cheaply ‘ against the howling of Badcock and . Campbell, and the last - three batsmen - failed to score at all. Mills and Graham, with 29 and 23 respectively, batted well, - Mills being bowled by Campbell, while Graham was caught by Lambert off the same bowler. Dickinson played a forceful innings for 19, but after he went out to Badcock the Old Boys batting collapsed, and as has been stdtcd. Cherry’s wicket fell right on time, with the score at 118. Campbell finished with three for IS and Badcock took four for 30. Scores

A drawn game resulted at Carisbrook, where the home side played Albion, Carisbrook won the toss and F. Kerr and H. Cameron opened to the bowling of Silver and Shepherd. Kerr succumbed to a ball from Silver without opening his s- jrc, and Cameron was joined by M‘Kay. Scoring was slow, but both batsmen were solid, and the score stood at 57 when Cameron lost his wicket to Allen. Cavanagh took his place and opened his shoulders to the bonding, knocking up a useful 35. He was also clean bowled by Allen. M‘Kay and Bell continued, the former reaching 21 before Smith spread his stumps with a tricky ball. Bell was hitting out with plenty of weight, but he seemed unable to get past the field. Dunning followed M‘Kay, but had a short life, being stumped by Collins off M‘Kay for two. Bell

took his score to 52, playing sound cricket. He was eventually dismissed Ibw by Allen with the score at 154. Carisbrook declared with nine wickets down for 164 runs. Allen and Smith each took three wickets, Silver accounted for one, and the other fell to Duncan, With an hour hand a-half to play, Dalziel and Smith opened for Albion to the bowling of A. Kerr and Dunning, Both were seizing every opportunity and the first three overs yielded 15 runs. The Carisbrook fielding was very sound and the batsmen found it increasingly difficult to make runs. After an hour’s play, during which the opening batsmen successfully withstood the assault of all the bowlers, 80 runs had been scored. Both Dalziel and. Smith hit out at every ball which gave them a chance. After 70 minutes at the wickets the partnership was broken when Dalziel was run out. His score was 45, including several fours. Ditchfield joined Smith, and the total reached 100 wi(h 10 minutes left to play, Smith reaching his half century a few minutes later. When stumps were drawn the total had been taken to 110, Smith contributing 56 not out. The detailed scores arc as follows:CARISBROOK. First Innings.

UNIVERSITY V. DUNEDIN The University bowlers had a real field day in the match between University and Dunedin on Saturday afternoon at the University, disposing of Dunedin for the very low total of 47 in the first innings and 51 in the second innings. In fact, University came very near registering an eight-point win and would have won outright had it not been for the rock-like, if uninteresting, innings of M'Knight, Dunedin’s opening batsman, who carried his bat for 18. In the last half hour Dunedin was struggling hard to secure the seven runs needed to avoid a straight-out defeat, and it was only through the efforts of M'Knight that they were finally successful. It took them over half an hour to score 11 runs, and the rate at which the wickets fell gave' University grounds for the hope that the whole side might be accounted for before the two innings score of Dunedin equalled University’s 94 for eight wickets, declared. Cameron and Henderson were the most dangerous of the University bowlers, the former securing six wickets for 18 in Dunedin’s first innings and four wickets for 16 in the second strike. Henderson’s figures were only less impressive, being one for 9 in the first innings and five for 23 in the second. The highest score of the day was Uttley’s 22 for University, which was compiled in bright style. M'Kuight’s 18 was the best performance with the bat for Dunedin, and Douglas, with five wickets for 38 to his credit, was the most effective of the Dunedin bowlers. The scores were as follows: —
