“TRUTHFUL ALBION”

TO 'THIS EDITOR. Sir,— lt was most cheering to read the cabled report of a speech by M. llerriot at the Radical-Socialist Party conference, in which, after emphasising that co-opera-tion between England and France was indispensable for the protection of what liberty still remained in the. world, he added that when Britain declared that she had no personal interests in the conflict between Italy and Abyssinia, France must believe her. France must not doubt the word of a British Minister or of a British gentleman. “When the British Minister says, ‘ That is our position,’ I declare emphatically, ‘ I believe you.’ I ask my countrymen to do the same. Britain lias a horror of lying.” Now why has Britain a horror of lying? Because the Bible has taught us to be absolutely truthful and straightforward. And “ straightforward is the best runner ” always. Thus the tribute of M. llerriot to our truthfulness is, in fact, a tribute to the Bible, which has so greatly influenced our nation for good. These words have been stamped upon our nation;—“Lying lips are abomination to the Lord; but they that deal truly are His delight.”—l am, etc., Maran-atha.
