AMATEUR SWIMMING

MEETING OF OTAGO CENTRE The weekly meeting of the Otago Swimming Centre was held last evening and was attended by the president (Mr YV. A. Jenkins), Messrs D. T. Woodfield, W. Harrison, A. Findlay, E. Sonntag, J. M'Taggart, W. H. Matthews, S. Brown, P. W. Harkess, E. H. James, W. Williams, E. C. Isaacs, D. Thomson, A. Greig, D. C. Bannatync, B. Kerr and W. L. Colvin. > WATER POLO. Advice was received from the Dunqdin and Kiwi Clubs that each proposed entering an A and a B team in the Donald Stuart Banner competition.—Referred to the Polo Committee. Mr H. V. Jerred was appointed selector for the water polo team in place of Mr Isaacs. The secretary of the University Club wrote advising that the club wished to enter a team in the B Grade competition, but pointed out that it would be unable to compete until March.—Received. INTERMEDIATE AND JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS. The secretary submitted the following draft programme for the Otago intermediate and junior championships, to be held on December 11:—100 Yards and 220 Yards Intermediate Boys' Championships; Intermediate Boys', Intermediate Girls', Junior Boys' and Junior Girls' Diving Championships; 100 Yards Intermediate Boys' Breaststroke Championship; 100 Yards Intermediate Girls' Championship; 75 Yards Intermediate Girls' Breaststroke Championship; 50 Yards Junior Girls' and 100 Yards Junior Boys' Freestyle Championships; 50 Yards Junior Girls',.7s Yai'ds Junior Boys' and 75 Yards Intermediate Girls' Backstroke Championships; 133 1-3 Yards Four-a-side Relay Championship; 220 Yards Interelub Handicap; 33 1-3 Yards Second-class Handicap. Monday, December 9, at 0 p.m.:—220 Yards Junior Boys' and 220 Yards Intermediate Girls' Championships; 100 Yards Junior Girls' Championship. Tuesday, December 10, at 0 p.m.:—75 Yards Junior Boys' Breaststroke and 100 Yards Intermediate Boys' Backstroke Championships; 50 Yards Junior Girls' Breaststroke Championship. Thursday, December 12:—440 Yards Intermediate Boys' Championship. The programme was approved. HARBOUR RACES. At the invitation of the centre Mr W. Rowlands and Mr E. Yates, of the North-East Harbour Boating Club, met the,members after the business of the meeting had been concluded, and informally discussed the arrangements for the Annette Kellerman Cup and Batt Cup races, which are to be contested on February 19 and February 2 respectively, at Macandrew Bay. The visitors assured the centre of the club's co-operation, and after the questions of the course, the provision of boats and launches to follow the race, and facilities for the swimmers had been considered, the matter was deferred to allow the Programme Committee to decide on a suitable course to suit the tide. GENERAL. The chairman remarked on the fact that many of the costumes worn at the Labour night' carnival did not conform to the rules laid down by the New Zealand Council. They Avere of all colours and designs, and it might be as well if the secretaries of the various clubs were to post up the rule covering the subject so that swimmers could study it. —It was decided to request the secretaries to act along the lines of the chairman's suggestion. In reply to a request from the Balclutha Club it was decided to write forwarding particulars of the forthcoming Country Clubs' Championships, and assuring the club that every endeavour would be made to arrange for a, visit to Balclutha during February by prominent swimmers. A letter was received from the secretary of the Otago Education Board notifying the centre of the board's decision to appoint a sub-committee to meet representatives of the Otago Primary Schools' Sports Association, the Schools Committees'. Association, and the Otago Swimming Centre to discuss the teaching of swimming in schools. —The president and Messrs Isaacs and Bannatyne were appointed to represent the centre at the conference.
