HISTORICAL DOCUMENTS
A letter written by Captain Cook and a first edition of his journal Avill shortly be sold bv auction in London, and it goes without saying that they Avill bring high prices. The passion for collecting such material of historical interest has subsided a little during the ( depression—or, rather, the money available is less than it used to be —but there will be plenty of competition for the Cook items. New Zealand is especially interested (says the Christchurch Star-Sun), but it is doubtful if there Avill be serious competition from this country. 'lt is a question Avorth discussing Avhether the Government should not set aside a sum each year for the purchase of hooks and documents bearing on the history of the Dominion. Fortunatoly, enthusiastic collectors in the past acquired many thousands of such documents, Avhich have been preserved, as in the Turnbull Library, for the people ol the Dominion, but the build?ng up of the historical collection in the’ great new central library to be established in Wellington ought not to be left- to private generosity.
