268 MILES IN 3HR 58MIN (From Our Own Correspondent) (By Air Mail) LONDON, October 5. The Silver Jubilee, the new streamline train of London North-Eastern Railway, made a successful inaugural passengei run from Neivcastle to London. Hie distance is 268 miles, and this Avas covered in lavo minutes under the scheduled time of four hours. The highest speed attained avus 90 miles per hour. , The average speed o\’er the aa hole distance was 07 miles an hour, but owing to a “slack” to 23 m.p.h. through Durham, ami to further speed restrictions over colliery Avorkings, an of only 54 m.p.h. Avas maintained betAveen NeAvcastle and Darlington. This meant that the 232 miles from Darlington to London Avere due to he covered in 198 minutes at an average speed, start to stop, of 70 m.p.h;—the fastest schedule in the British Isles for a distance of more than 200 miles. . Passengers had no impression of abnormal speed, so quiet and smooth Avas the running. The actual running times on the inaugural run slioav that there Avill no difficulty in maintaining the schedule. The engine Avas driven “easily ” as far as York, where it was four minutes behind schedule, but this Avas more than regained by the time Grantham Avas reached, and at Hitcbin the train was nearly four minutes early. Hundreds of people cheered the arrival at King’s Cross, and the Lord Mayor of London, Sir Stephen Killik, avus there to Avelcome the streamline train and Newcastle’s Lord Mayor. On the return journey the Silver Jubilee covered the distance in 4hr 2min, just four minutes more than the run to London.
