Shepherd, Morven.—Criticisms received. Part held over, as one is doubtful. GAMES. GAME No. 330. —"Ayrshire Lassie." The game below is the only game drawn against Mr G. A. Brown in the recent tourney In Christchurch. It will be of interest to readers, as it runs into Game No. 306, which Mr Shadbolt played against him at Dannevirke. It will be noted that note (e) corrects some play given by Mr Shepherd on September 28 where he attempts to show a draw on Shadbolt’s line of play:—

(a) 8 11, 15 19, and 9 14 are also good. Text forms a " Wagram.” (b) 29 25 is equally as good. (o) Rarely ever adopted. 8 11 and 9 14 are the usual replies. (d) Now the same as Game No. 306 (Shadbolt v. Brown). (e) A good move. 15 18 and 12 16 also draw, but 2 7 loses. (g) Not given in the main text hooks of the game, yet It is the strongest and safest move that Black can play. DOMINION TOURNEY. Below are two more of the games played in the tourney at Dannevirke: — GAME No. 331.—" Edinburgh." Black, D. Gibson. White, G. Duncan.

(a) This evens up the weakness o£ the initial move and gives an equal game. (b) Played by Ferrie against Leiberman in the International match, and the annotator says: “This would appear to be the favourite line, though both 5 9 and 10 15 have recently figured as alternatives. Being so well known, however, it does not have the winning chances o £ the other two lines mentioned.” (c) 22 17, making a “ Wagram,” is a good alternative. (d) 18 14 is better. Text is not favoured, but 28 24 or 27 24 or 27 23 are all playable. (e) White’s • difficulties appear to have commenced thus early, and soon become . worse. GAME No. 332.—" Edinburgh.”

(a) One of the alternatives mentioned in note (b) previous game. (b) 28 24 or 22 18 is a good lino. (c) 32 27, 12 19. 27 23, 4 8, 23 16 seems better. CRITICISM. Mr A. Shephe r d writes: I give my solution to Problem 84, Encyclopaedia of Draughts, by W. Beattie. Position—Black 3. 21, Kings 27, 29; White 12, 28, 30, King
