JUBILEE INSTITUTE BAND

The band of the New Zealand Institute for the Blind is expected to arrive in Dunedin ip -day and will present concerts in the Town Hall to-morrow night and on Monday night. The magnificent results achieved by the institute in training the blind are well known, but it is not often that audiences have the opportunity of attending an actual demonstration of them. It is an inspiration to sec how these young men make light of the heaviest of burdens and expect no concession on that account. Most of the band members, prior to taking up band work had a thorough initial training in pianoforte and part singing. The various parts are transcribed into braille, which can effectively present the ordinary musical notation. These are learnt by heart and difficult and intricate pieces are played by the band with little obvious leadership by its quite confident conductor, Lieutenant G. W. Bowes, late of the Bth Hussars. The band ha.a toured the North Island and the north of- the South Island and has been enthusiastically received in all centres. The press reports on the various concerts have been most favourable. The party also includes instrumental soloists.
