CATLINS FIRE LOSSES
TO THE EDITOR. StR, —It was with indignation and a little amusement that I road the letter from “ Bush Farmer ” in last Saturday’s Daily Times—indignation at what is quite evidently a selfish view of the recent tires, and amusement at his warning to the Government to be careful. It is clear that “ Bush Farmer ” lias not suffered any losses nor been put to any inconvenience through these fires. He would “ like to live to see more such fires.” If he had had to leave his homo, goods, and chattels, some of whicn, for their associations, money can never replace, and had lost a year’s feed for his stock, and perhaps some of that stock, it would perhaps have shown him another aspect of what fire can do when it takes charge. It will please him, no doubt, to learn that the Government is being careful, as money has to be advanced only to those who can obtain credit in no other way whatsoever, and 4 per cent, per annum has to be paid on this “ assistance,” which must be repaid in three years.—l am, etc., A Setti.eie’s Wife. Taliakopa, October 23.
