I would like to know if the Provincial Council of Otago was in existence at that time, as ' I understood that the first toll gate to be opened under the council was the Stoney Creek toll, which was opened on 186 - b y my father, Mr Alex, b. [the Provincial Council in Otago was, as in Auckland, Taranaki, Wellington, Nelson, and Canterbury, in existence from 1853' to 1870. —Ed. O.D.T.J
