PAYMENT OF PENSIONS

INCREASE IN RATES RETROSPECTIVE TO JULY 31 (From Our Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, October 21. The restoration of the old-age pension rates, restrospective to July 31, which was authorised by the Finance Act last week, will come into force with the monthly payment of pensions on Wednesday, according to a statement made to-day by tbe Minister of Pensions, Mr J. G. Cobbe. All pensioners drawing the full pension which, during the period of the cuts, amounted to £3 1 Is Sd, will receive an extra 12s 6d this month, and thereafter an extra 4s 2d monthly. Mr Cobbe said that the staff of the Pensions Department had been more than ordinarily busy for some days past in an effort to prepare vouchers for the increased pension payments. There were about 40,000 old-age pensioners, and to prepare warrants enabling the retrospective payment on the ordinary pay day the staff had to work long hours and throughout the last week-end in addition.

The department was now busy on the pay warrants for the increases made in the widows’, miners’, and war pensions, the Minister continued, and it was estimated that back pay for these classes of pensioners would be available by tne end of the week.
