BALCLUTHA Golf In the third round of the Knock-out Cup Competition, played on the Balclutha links on Saturday, Clark beat Allan (3 and 1), Lennox beat Sparks (4 and 2), Randle beat C. Lewis (1 up). Bowling The attendance was good at the opening of the Balclutha green on Saturday afternoon, visitors from other clubs being among those present. The president (Mr T. M’Connack) opened proceedings with a few remarks and called on the Mayor (Mr D. T. Fleming) to declare the green open for the season. Miss M’Cormack then rolled the first bowl, and those present indulged in an enjoyable game, the sides being captained by the president and the vice-president. The ladies of the club provided afternoon tea. The green proved heavy, but good, and was a great improvement compared with the surface of last year. Burglary Charge A young man named Donald James Jones, was charged at Owaka, before Mr T. Maginness, J.P., with breaking and entering Wright’s store at Honipapa and stealing goods to the value of £3 0s 6d. He was remanded to appear at Dunedin to-morrow. Other charges are pending against the accused, who bad been captured by Constable Dark while trying to make an escape on a motor cycle. When he broke into Wright’s store he had been masked, and when confronted by the proI rietor had flashed a torch in race exclaiming, “ I’ve got you covered.” He had then decamped. The accused had been employed for some time as a farm worker in the district, and is a native of England. Cricket Balclutha A team visited Milburn on Saturday and won the match with 171 runs to Milburn’s 111. The best scores for Balclutha were made by Baxter (62), Henderson (33), A. Sten’art (23), Gold (22), and Cockerill (12), Bowling lor Milburn C. Kane took six for 37, Taylor two for 11. Anicich topped the score for Milburn with 50, D. Bowie 12, Grey 11. Bowling for Balclutha Henderson took five for 50 and Guest four for 26. High School defeated Balclutha B on the School Ground. The School compiled 204. M’Farlane scored 46, Flew 38, Gormack 33, and Green 20. Bowling for Balclutha Moffat took three for 20, Frenglcy three for 50, and Milne two for 33. For Balclutha B Moffat (30 run out) made the best score. Other scorers mere: Clent 24, Lntta 14. and Frengley 12. Bowling for School Flew took three for 20, Green three for 27, and Grimshaw two for 23. Waiwera defeated Waihola. MILTON Personal Constable A. Kerse (Milton) commenced hia annual leave of absence on Monday morning. Constable J. Patterson, of .Dunedin, is acting as relieving officer. Fire at Milburn Shortly after returning from his weekly trip to Dunedin last Thursday night, Mr Richard Leckie, of Milburn, had the misfortune to have his loaded motor lorry, garage, and cowbyre completely destroyed by fire. The lorry was loaded with general merchandise, including two large drums'of'petrol. Mr Leckie had backed the lorry into the garage on his return from Dunedin, and proceeded to his residence. While he ’was having teg he noticed the garage and byre blazing fiercely. The presence of the drums of petrol' made it dangerous to attempt any salvage work, and everything was completely destroyed. The origin of the outbreak is unknown.
