ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES
TRAGEDY NEAR WAITATI MOTOR CYCLIST KILLED. A fatal accident occurred near Waitati late yesterday afternoon, when a motor cycle came into, violent collision with a motor car. The rider of the cycle, William Eric Johnstone, aged 18 years, who resided at 399 George street, suffered extensive injuries, including a compound fracture of the skull, a fracture of the jaw, and compound fractures of the leg bones. Medical attention was given him by Dr C. M. Greenslade, and he was later admitted to the Prospect House Private Hospital. Little hope wag entertained of his recovery, and he succumbed to his injuries about half-past 9. Edward Hayward, aged 19' years, residing at 62 Harrow street, who was riding on the pillion of the cycle, also received injuries necessitating hie removal to the Hospital. He was admitted at 5.55 p.m. suffering from head injuries and concussion, but his condition is not regarded aa serious. FARMER'S SUDDEN DEATH A NATIVE OF DUNEtfIN. (Pee United Press Association) DARGAVILLE, October 19. The death took place in tragic circumstances last night of William Donaldson, widower, aged 68, a well-known Hoanga farmer. The deceased had not been well for some time. After taking part in a dance at a Scottish Society function he walked to the door and expired. The deceased was a native of Dunedin, and served in the Boer War. He was a member of the Queensland unit and prominent in Scottish Society circles. He was a successful pioneer and a popular farmer in the district, where practically all the settlers are returned soldiers. INJURED IN .COLLISION THREE YOUNG MEN IN HOSPITAL. (Per United Press Association) AUCKLAND. October 19. As the result of a collision between a motor cycle and a bicycle early this morning near Avondale, Keith Francis Mathews, aged 18. who was riding the machine. David Crump, aged 21, who was on the pillion, and Henry Chappell. aged 19, the cyclist, were taken to hospital in a serious condition. All the victims were suffering from concussion. BOY DROWNED IN RIVER TRAGIC FISHING EXPEDITION. (Per United Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH. October 20. Leslie Samuels, aged 15, of Colombo street, Christchurch, was drowned about mid-day to-day. He was fishing with a companion in a flat-bottomed boat in the Heathcote River, near Wooleton. The boat capsized, and, though his companion swam to the shore, Samuels was unable to swim and was drowned.
