Going Gay, the favourite for the Maiden Race, ran well, but she was soundly beaten into fourth place after having every chance, except that she hung out oji the turn. Mowgli and Going Gay began best and made the running to the straight from Entheos, Flit Acre, and The Image, with a gap to the bunch, which was headed by Mesurina and Entail. Going Gay led into the straight, but Flit Acre moved forward and took charge immediately, running on for .a decisive win. There was a big change in the order behind him, the field closing up and Going Gay being passed by Entail and Begorrah before reaching the post. Then came The Image, Happy Landing, Entheos, and Callisto, The winner scored really well after holding a good position throughout. Entail was running on strongly from further back, and Begorrah came right from the ruck. Happy Landing was also well back early. Soloist did not belie his name in the hurdle race. He gave a fast display of jumping, and, outpacing his opponents on the flat, never looked like losing. Esteem gained ground on him over the concluding stages, but only because Soloist was being held in, and he had a good deal in hand at the post, while Esteem was flat out. Kaola was a poor third, with Gold Cure, Ruaform, and Bay Sand following. The winner gave nothing a chance, though Esteem ran one of his best races. Gold Cure was possibly a bit unlucky. He got chopped out about six furlongs from home, losing several lengths, and then when running up strongly again on the home turn he got into the second-last fence, which finally extinguished his chance All the same, it is doubtful if 'he would have beaten Soloist. Ruaform was never likely, and Lady Wessex ran off at the second fence. Gay Boy was favoured with a slice of luck when Lady Eka hung out and let him through to the front as they turned into the straight, besides interfering with Sporting Song and Rust, but'Gav Boy won well all the same. Rompalong and Lady Eka led out of the straight, and down the back Lady Eka had charge from Rompalong, Gay Boy, Sporting Song, Midacre, Blue Tiger, and Trackman. Rompalong was nearly down on the turn and dropped back, Lady Eka being in front of Gay Boy and Sporting Song as they entered the straight, with Rust showing up on the outer. When Lady Eka hung out Gay Boy shot through and soon had the race won, though Lady Eka got going again at the finish, with Blue Tiger, Sporting Song, and Rust well up, followed by Silver Brier, Rompalong, and Ingenuity. The winner raced solidly, and is improving. Lady Eka showed striking improvement both in form and stamina, and was possibly a bit unlucky in not bringing off a sensational win. She carried only £2O. Silver Brier was disappointing. Royal Banquet, the favourite in the four-horse Maransri Handicap, was narrowly beaten by Ruri, who had the luck to get up on the inner on the home turn. Royal Banquet made all the running, attended by Spiral and Buri, with Tres Sec last. Tics Sec moved up towards Spiral on the home turn, and this put Ruri in a bad pocket, but he suddenly ranged up on the inside of Royal Banquet, and in another moment was going for the post, with a slight advantage. Royal Banquet fought him to the bitter end. but he had given away a winning advantage, and could not recover it. Spiral was a poor third. Ruri put up a good performance, but he was vorv lucky to get up on the inner as he did. Spiral needs racing. Midian moved up from the middle of th'p file approaching the turn in the Seafield Handicap, and taking the lead off Severe about throe furlongs from home scored a most decisive win. Golden Hair ,

lost her rider at the start, Passion Fruit beginning best from No. 1, attended by Severe, Farmer, and Bunfight, with a gap to Midian, and the rear brought up by West Tor and Fersen. Severe took sole charge down the back, but lost the lead to Midian about halfway round the turn, and was also being passed by Passion Fruit as she weakened entering the straight. By the time they straightened up Midian had the race well in hand, and won comfortably from Passion Iruit. West Tor put in a strong run home lor third, with Carfex and Fersen hawand then Farmer and Severe. Midian gave one of his best displays, winning verv impressively. Passion Fruit ran a jroo'd race, and West Tor finished well, but they never looked like getting Midian. Fersen also finished well, and is improving. Severe failed signally to run on. Bunfight was never ,a possibility. Alchemic, the favourite for the HacU Sprint, just won in a very close finish with an outsider in Thane. Lady Ruler and Grand Score began best and made the- pace to the turn from Gold Gleam, Alchemic. Mustang, Hunting Cat. Granvane, and Thane. Lowenberg, who had drawn No. 1, began slowly, and by the time they ran out of the back stretch had fallen right back to the rear. Lady Ruler weakened on the turn and Grand Score entered the straight in the lead from Gold Gleam and Alchemic, with the field closing up. Alchemic headed Ofi the leaders over the last half furlong, but Thane put in a solid run and at the post had just failed by the narrowest of margins to get up. Gold Gleam was a close third, with Lowenberg fourth, followed bv Hunting Cat, Grand Score, and Mustang. Alchemie's win was very close and he carried a 51b allowance, but it was a good effort. Thane nearly won at long odds and should be improved by the race. Gold Gleam also ran well. Lowenberg s performance was possibly the best of all for he never got a go until too late. Grand Score failed to stay, but ran well, and so did Hunting Cat and Mustang. Tail Light ran moderately. The three-year-old filly Galilee showed her class bv winning the Flying Handicap in brilliant style all the way. Mother Superior, Slippery, Refresher, Tl Duce, and Hororata were handiest early, Haut Monde, Gold Mission, and Curie being slow to move off. Slippery went up to Galilee on the turn, but the filly was always doing it better and held her own to the post from him. Haut Monde put in some fine galloping at the end to get a moderate third, with Mother Superior fourth, followed by Refresher, Gold Mission, Curie. Hororata, and II Duce. Galilee won like a good-class three-year-old, the time for the state of the track emphasising the merit of her win. Slippery again ran his honest race and improved a little. Haut Monde was unlucky to lose ground at the start and then when finally going up on the inner he got stopped. It was the best performance on the day of the Guineas candidates. Mother Superior ran a very creditable race for a first appearance. Hororata showed up for a while only, as did II Duce.
