CARISBROOK CLUB SIXTIETH ANNUAL MEETING The sixtieth annual meeting of members of the Carisbrook Cricket Club was held last night at the University Club rooms. The president (Mr Crosby Morris.) occupied the chair and there was a large attendance of members. the adoption* of the annual report and balance sheet was moved by the chairman, who said that last season had been a very successful one, and the club was to be congratulated on the results attained by its teams. Play had been of a high standard and in all its fixtures the club had played a good sporting game with a distinct degree of success. Speaking of Otago cricket in general, the chairman said that last year had been one of the most successful seasons ever experienced. The interest of the public seemed to be increasing, and there had been a decided improvement in the attendances at club matches. They had to congratulate Grange Club on winning the senior competition. The step which had been taken at the beginning of last season in raising the second eleven to senior status had been fully justified as the team had finished fifth out of 10 in the competition. The jubilee of the club had been fittingly celebrated at the close of last season. The motion was seconded by Mr J. M. Fraser, who spoke briefly on the clubs finances and expressed regret that the club had lost so many valuable members in the past year. The motion was carried. ELECTION OF OFFICERS The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows:-—President, Mr Crosby Morris; vice-presidents—Messrs C. W. Rattray, G. R. Ritchie, A. H. Fisher. J. Hope, A. H. Allen; club captain, Mr J. W. Howorth; deputy club captain, Mr Ki F. S. Cox; secretary, Mr J. G. Cameron; treasurer, Mr E. J. Mullin; committee —Messrs R. C. Bell, J. A. Dunning, A. C. Procter, T. P. Cuddie, J. M. M'Mullan; selectors, Messrs J. A. Dunning and J. W. Howorth; delegates to Otago Cricket Association—Measrs G. G. Austin, J. W. Howorth and T. P. Cuddie; auditor, Mr A. A. Rayner; delegate to Boys' Association. Mr E. W. Procter. TROPHIES PRESENTED The trophies won during last season were presented by the president as follows:—First Grade A team (Mr A. H. Fisher). R. Williams; First Grade B team (Mr Crosby Morris), D. R. M'Kay; Second Grade A team (Mr J. Hope), T. Mackie: D team (Mr C. W. Rattray), J. H. Malcolm; E team (Mr A. H. Allen), A. Lampen; Mr G. R. Ritchie's special trophy, L. R. Hercus; Mr H. Harraways special trophy for promising junior member. R. Carter. SENIOR COMPETITION Mr R. C. Bell said he thought the club's delegates to the association should be given a lead regarding the club's attitude towards a possible cutting down of the number of teams in the senior competition.. He referred to the performance of the Carisbrook B team and expressed the opinion that it would be fair neither to the coach nor the players if that team were" dropped from the competition.— Several speakers supported Mr Bell's remarks.—Mr Howorth said that the B team had been promoted to First Grade on the understanding that it should be dropped out if necessary, and whatever the feelings of the members might be the committee could not complain if the association decided to drop the team from the competition.—Mr Cox said that, while there was a moral obligation on the club to withdraw the team if the association required it, there was also a moral obligation on the association to recognise the performance given by the team last season. —The chairman said he did not think there was any doubt that 10 teams were too many for Otago cricket, but he thought that if the competition could be reduced_ to eight teams it would be to the benefit of the game.—After several other _ members had expressed their opinions, it was decided to leave the matter to the discretion of the delegates. GENERAL The subscriptions for the ensuing year were fixed at the same figures as last year. Nominations for 10 new members were received. Mr Howorth made reference to the services which had been rendered to the club in the past by Mr D. S. Cameron, and reported that he had offered a trophy for competition among the club's teams A motion of appreciation was carried. A motion of appreciation of Mr Charman's services to the club was also carried. The advisability of leaving the appointment of captains to the committee was mentioned by Mr J. M. Fraser. Men who. were best fitted to lead others were very rare, he said, and it was frequently the case that the man who had most to say or was most popular at the time was chosen. It was not unlikely that the committee could choose the captains better than the team members themselves. He moved that it should be a recommendation to the incoming committee to appoint team captains.—The motion was carried without discussion. OTAGO UMPIRES ANNUAL MEETING OF ASSOCIATION

The annual meeting of the Otago Cricket Umpires' Association was held in'the Y.M.C.A. last evening, Mr W. W. Mackersey presiding over a good attendance of members. ANNUAL REPORT.

In its annual report the committee congratulated the members of the association on the excellent manner in which they had carried out their duties during the' season. The death of Mr J. Wilson, who had been an active senior umpire for many years, was recorded with sincere regret, and sympathy was also extended to Mr E. A. Hamel who had received' a serious injury to his knee during a senior match. An increase of membership was recorded, by there was still loom for more members and the committee trusted that the clubs would do their best to induce their older members to join the association. Umpires were provided for all senior and intermediate matches, and also for several important junior matches. The association had a credit balance of £7 17s 9d and the committee expressed its thanks to those clubs which gave financial assistance. The chairman, moving the adoption of the report and balance sheet, said that the association's membership had increased slightly, but the association was still unable to provide sufficient umpires for all grades, which was one of the aims of the association He hoped that past cricketers and keen club supporters with a sound knowledge of the game would be encouraged to come forward and help the game in Otago. The association's financial position was sound, the credit balance at the end of the past year being £7 17s 9d. The association awarded the points tor the Fielding Cup in the Senior Grade Competition, and the Grange Cricket Club, which won the trophy as well as the senior shield, was to be congratulated on its success. The motion was seconded by Mr &. A. Hamel. who said that the cricketers in Dunedin were more than satisfied with the work of the umpires during the season. The association had had a highly successful year, both financially and otherwise. The report and balance sheet.,* were adopted. ELECTION OF OFFICERS. The following office-bearers were elected for the ensuing year: —Patron, president of the 0.C.A.; president, Mr W. W. Mackersey; vice-presidents, Messrs W. Butler and G. M'Queen; secretary and treasurer, Mr W. A. Rowland; committee—Messrs A. M'Kay, H. Bunn, W. M. Beal; delegate to the 0.C.A., Mr W. A. Rowland; selector, Mr W. A. Rowland; hon. auditor, Mr J. Porteous. Messrs J. F. M'Gregor, G. M'Donald. A. G. Ballantyne, J. M'Lintock, and G. E. Baird were nominated as members of the association. GENERAL. Mr J. S. Douglas suggested that the association should take some steps towards assuring that matches should be started on time. —The chairman said that the association's umpires had endea-

voured, with considerable success, to have the senior matches commenced on time, but the same success had not attended their efforts in the junior matches. — After a short discussion, in which it was pointed out that this question was discussed practically every year, and that the position would not improve unless the association took a firm stand, the chairman said that in the future umpiies should abide strictly by the rules of the game, and, in the event of a team being unduly late on the field, award the match to the other team. The secretary of the Marylebone Cricket Club wrote with reference to a question submitted by the association, and quoted the notes on law 35, which read as follows: — "A bowler may run a batsman out, without having delivered the ball, in any way authorised by the laws. He may have passed the bowling crease in his run or may change the ball from one hand to the other before throwing at the wicket or knocking at the bails. The bails may be knocked off from either side of the wickets."—The letter was received. A donation of f 3 3s from the association's funds was granted to Mr Hamel as part compensation for the injury he received during the past season. The secretary was instructed to communicate with the Otago Cricket Association advising it that a member of the Umpires' Association had been seriously injured at a niatch last season, and that the association considered that the parent body should help to reimburse Mr Hamel for the expenses he incurred. The secretary was further instructed to obtain information regarding an insurance policy covering umpires and submit it to the Otago Cricket Association for consideration. Mr E. A. Hamel was elected the first life member of the association.
