BOXING
OAMARU TOURNAMENT Tlie North Otago championships will be held in the Opera House, Oamnru, on Tuesday next. The entries, which close this evening, are coming in freely. The association was endeavouring to secure a match .between O'Connell (Macraes) and " Snowy ". Olson (Dunedin), but has received advice from Olsen that he has broken his hand, so he will not be able to take part. The association is now making arrangements for a suitable opponent for O'Connell. O'Connell is well-known to Oamaru supporters. Although defeated he put up a great fight against Olsen at the recent Otago championships in Dunedin. The Jenkins brothers and Ted Cleverley, who each annexed an Otago championship, received great praise after their bouts in Dunedin. They are at the top of their form, and should put up an excellent showing on Tuesday next. As far as the association can ascertain no Oamaru boy has previously won an Otago championship, at least during the past 15 years. It was very gratifying to see three championships come to Oamaru at the last Otago meeting. Several novices will be taking part in the tournament, and some of the schools have surprises, and these bouts should be full of interest. JOHN BULLEID AND CO., LTD. ANNUAL MEETING Mr D. Findlay (chairman of directors) presided over a fair attendance at the twenty-third annual meeting of John Bulleid and Co., Ltd. The chairman said that business during the year had been well maintained, and the turnover showed a gratifying increase on the previous year's figures. Notwithstanding the inevitable rise of expenditure to deal with the larger volume of business, the net result showed a substantial improvement, enabling the directors, after making adequate provision for depreciation and all contingencies, including income tax, to raise the rate of the dividend to. 0 per cent. Mr Findlay said that the turnover had increased by £BOOO in the past three years. Another feature to which the chairman drew attention was the low figure at which stocks stood at balancing date, showing that the previous season's goods had been almost entirely disposed of, thus enabling them to commence each season with absolutely new season's goods. The retiring directors, Messrs J. M. Bulleid and A. C. Piper, were re-elected, and Mr D. V. G. Smith was reappointed auditor. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded the directors, manager, secretary, and members of staff for their loyalty and enthusiasm.—Replying, Mr Findlay stressed the services of the staff, without whose assistance and co-operation success would not be possible. OBITUARY The funeral of Mrs Nelmes took place on September 10 at St. John's Churchyard, Waikouaiti. Mrs Nelmes was in her ninety-eighth year, and was born at Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire. She was a very old identity, having arrived in Otago in the ship Ajax in 1849. She could tell many tales about the early days. Her put the first bridge across the Leith, Dunedin, by felling a tree from each bank of the river and then railing laths of wood to join them. Her father and mother managed the dairy farm of the late Mr Suisted, Otepopo, and it was while they were there that Mrs Woolley made a quantity of cheese which was sent Home. This would, no doubt, be the first cheese to be sent to the Old Country from Otago. Mrs Nelmes was Mr and Mrs Woolley's eldest daughter, and she married Richard Nelmes. who predeceased her by 20 years. Mrs Nelmes was of a kindly nature, and during her long life she made many friends. She had no family, but her youngest sister survives her, and there are a great number of nephews and nieces. LAWN TENNIS FRIENDLY BAY CLUB There was only a fair attendance at the annual meeting of the Friendly Bay Lawn Tennis Club. In reviewing the year's activities the chairman (Mr F. Bedford) stated that the two teams put up a good performance in the junior competition, but unless there was an increase in membership it would not be advisable to enter a B team in the coming season. The competitions and tournaments and match against Enfield were greatly enjoyed by the players, and the club was indebted to Messrs E. Baker, R. L. Banks and M. Hanley for contributions; and Messrs James Craig and Co. and J. T. Adams for trophies. The annual report and balance sheet showing a small credit balance were adopted. It was decided to hold the opening day on Saturday, October 28, and the appointment of office-bearers was held over until that date. COLUMBA CLUB There was a good attendance of members at the annual meeting of the Coluinba Lawn Tennis Club, Mr B. B. Walton occupying the chair. In reviewing the past season the chairman said the membership had shown a slight falling-off in numbers owing to removals and transfers to other clubs, but interest was well maintained throughout the year. Two teams were entered in the junior competition, and the members of the A team were to be congratulated on winning the competition without the loss of a single match. The B team suffered somewhat from lack of experience, but on the whole acquitted themselves remarkably well. Several of the members took part in the Christmas tournament and met with a fair measure of success. Miss B. Anderson and W. Westphall were to be congratulated on winning the Girls' and Boys' Championships respectively. Other members of the club reached the semi-finals in some of the senior events. Several of the members were selected for the North Otago junior team, and justified their inclusion. Thanks to the enthusiasm on the part of the committee and other members, the courts were kept in excellent order throughout the season. The season was commenced with a credit balance of £l7 5s 2d, and after providing for all liabilities there was now a credit balance of £lO 2s Id. Thanks were due to the vice-presidents and all who had So _ generously assisted the club, to the ladies who dispensed afternoon teas, to the press for publishing reports of matches and weekly information to members, and to members for their continued interest in the club's welfare.
