ESCAPE FROM CUSTODY
DEPORTED FROM VANCOUVER i ——— SIX-YEAR-OLD OFFENCES (Per United Press Association) AUCKLAND, September 9. Herbert Lawrence Handley, aged 41, who was deported last year.from Vancouver on account of his association with offences in New Zealand nearly six years ago, was sentenced to-day for those offences. ' He pleaded guilty to charges of stealing a car and obtaining money by falsely representing himself as the owner of a business. Council said the prisoner, after his escape from a train while travelling in custody from Wellington to Auckland, got away on a steamer and eventually reached Vancouver. His wife and family joined him there. He got into trouble through the sale of liquor, and served six months' imprisonment, after which he was deported. Mr Justice Fair refused to grant probation, saying that the offences were calculated and deliberate. Escaping from custody was also a serious matter. The prisoner was sentenced to two years* imprisonment.
