KEPT FROM SCHOOL
CHILDREN'S RAILWAY FARES DISPUTE WITH AUCKLAND BOARD (Per United Press Association) HAMILTON, September 9. Fifty school children residing at Pukemiro Junction and attending the Rotowaro School (two miles by rail) failed to present themselves when the school was reopened after the term holidays. The parents of the children concerned held a meeting on Friday evening, when it was decided to protest against the alleged action of the Auckland Education Board in refusing to grant free railway tickets to school children over 10 years of age. It was stated that if the board failed to grant free tickets to all school children from Pukemiro Junction attending the school, or in the alternative unless it erected a school at Pukemiro Junction, the parents would refuse to send their children to school.
The number of children attending the Rotowaro School from Pukemiro Junction is estimated at 53, and a very small percentage of them is under 10 years of age. This morning only four or five pupils put in an appearance, and they were declared " black" by the bulk of the children who had gone on strike.
