TRIP TO PHILIPPINES

AMERICAN VICE-PRESIDENT JOURNEY VIA JAPAN WASHINGTON, August 27. The Vice-president of the United States, Mr John N. Garner, will visit Japan on his way to the Philippines. Mr Garner, as leader of a group of members of Congress, will go to the Philippines for the inauguration of the islands' new Government in the autumn. It was reported that he would act as a'goodwill ambassador to Japan, and then proceed to Australia for the same purpose.

These reports are now denied. Members of Mr Garner's staff indicate that the only reason Mr Garner is calling at Japan is that he prefers to travel by a commercial vessel calling at Yokohama rather than accompany the other officials on a warship. If the Japanese wish to receive Mr Garner formally, he will respond with a message of greetings from President Roosevelt. He will not, however, consider himself as heading a mission to Japan. Concerning a possible trip to Australia, this is said to be impossible, since Mr Garner must return to Washington by the middle of September to prepare for the re-convening of Congress in January.
