AMATEUR BOXING

OTAGO ASSOCIATION'S TOURNEY CHAMPIONSHIP HEATS DECIDED The Otago Amateur Boxing Championships were commenced in His Majesty's Theatre last evening, when the heats in the majority of the weights were decided. The attendance was not as large as might have been expected, considering that entries were better, and more representative, than they have been for some years, but those enthusiasts who were present, while they witnessed several very mediocre contests, also saw some which were well worth watching. The standard of the boxing compared with that of previous years, was somewhat disappointing, with the exception, perhaps, of half a dozen bouts, in which some really first-class lads were seen in action. J. Ramsay, the holder of the light-weight title, won his contest fairly comfortably, but easily the outstanding boxers of the evening were N. T. and S. Jenkins, of Oamaru, both of whom are stylish, clever, and hard-hitting lads. The former, a light-weight, had little difficulty in beating H. L, Cannon, and his brother scored a victory o*er W, E. Rogers in the welter-weight class after the best contest of the series. Messrs J. Kilmartin and R. Fulcher acted as referees, and Messrs S. Brown. W. J. Nelson. Kilmartin, and Fulcher as judges. Following are the results:— • FLY-WEIGHT. W. Drew 7.111 beat G. Luxton 7.3 J. Luxton appeared almost too young to tackle a championship bout, but Drew very sportingly refused to take advantage of his youth and lack of experience, and contented himself by carrying him along for the three rounds. BANTAM-WEIGHT. D. A. Leydon 8.4 J beat B. J. Reeves (Kaitangata) 8.55. Until the end of the second round, honours were, if anything, slightly in favour of the Kaitangata lad. He tired badly towards the end, however, and Leydon was having all the best of matters when the gong sounded. L. Greaney 8.5$ beat W. Drew 7.11|. Drew was always game to carry the fight to his heavier opponent, but he was doing too much hitting with the open glove nnd many of his punches lacked direction. Greaney's straight work was better than that,of his opponent, as was his timing. FEATHER-WEIGHT. J. Richmond 8.12 beat J. Craik 8.125. Richmond, fighting' with all his oldtime dash, was hitting much cleaner and straighter than his opponent, and using both hands well, he piled up the points to score a fairly easy win. LIGHT-WEIGHT. J. Ramsay 9.6$ beat R. L. O'Brien (Central Otago) 9.75. Ramsay, who is the holder of the title, was the cleaner hitter of the pair, and used the ring to better advantage than his opopnent. He used his left well, and occasionally connected with a solid right, which rattled O'Brien badly. The Central Otago lad took a good deal of punishment in the last round, and Ramsay's win was a fairly easy one. N. T. Jenkins (Oamaru) 9.5$ beat H. L. Cannon 9.15. Jenkins, who has a nice style, did all the straight hitting; there was, and used the ring well. Cannon was inclined to indulge in too much swinging and still clung to his old habit of hitting with the open glove. WELTER-WEIGHT. W. Langley 9.11 beat F. G. Pine 10.25. This was a poor bout from the .point of view of boxing, but it was willing enough. Langley was on top throughout, and Pine took a good deal of punishment that he could have escaped had he made better use of his reach and feet. W. A. Grant 9.12$ beat B. Orange 9.135. This was a punishing bout, which made up in willingness what it lacked in science. The pair literally puched one another to a standstill, and in the last round especially Orange took a terrific gruelling. S. Jenkins (Oamaru) 10.0$ beat W. E. Rogers 10.3. This wa« easily the best contest of the evening. Jenkins, who is a clever and shifty boxer, with a punch in either hand, gave a pretty display, and scored repeatedly with a beautiful left, which he followed up with a solid, punishing right. Rogers fought well, and was always willing to carry the battle to his opponent, but he was no match for Jenkins, whose defensive work was a treat to watch. A. D. Wheeler 10.1 beat R. Campbell 10.3 J. Campbell adopted rushing tactics, but Wheeler refused to be rattled, and kept propping him off with a raking left. Just before the end of the opening round he brought over a heavy right to the jaw, which sent Campbell down. He rose, but another right left him obviously too groggy to continue, I and the referee stopped the fight, and gave the decision to Wheeler. Semi-final. Grant beat Langley. Langley, who is a tough, rugged customer, kept boring in, and early in thp bout had Grant in trouble. 'Grant staged a good rally in the latter stages of the second round, but in the final round Langley hit him where and when he wished without Grant making the slightest attempt to defend or counter. Langley was decidedly unlucky to lose, but if being at the receiving end of everything that came along constituted a win, then Grant's victory was a decisive one. DRAW FOR THIS EVENING. The finals will be decided this evening. The following is the draw: — Fly-weight (final).—W. Drew v. M. Parr. Bantam-weight (final). —D. A. Leydon v. L. Greaney. Welter-weight (semi-final). —S. Jenkins v. D. Wheeler, W. Grant a bye. Feather-weight (special).—B. J. Reeve v. J. Craik. Light-weight (final). —N. Jenkins v. J. Ramsay. Middle-weight (final).—A. G. Olsen v. M. O'Connell. Light-heavy-weight (final).—E. Cleverley v. L. Coughlan. Light-weight (special).—R. L. O'Brien v. T. Walker. Feather-weight (final). —J. Richmond v. L. Greaney. Welter-weight, (final). —W. Grant v. winner of semi-final.
