CHRISTCHURCH BEATS OTAGO The annual matches between the Christchurch and Otago Golf Glubs were played over the Shirley course; Christchurch, in perfect weather. The,course was in excellent condition, and the greens " and fairways-were playing very true. The Foursomes were played in the morning, and were won by Christchurch^by two matches to one, with one finishing all square. The games were played to a finish, and resulted in favour of Christchurch by 7J points to 3£. All th« matches were closely contested, and there was practically nothing between the fours with more than half of the journey covered. C. J. Ward and A, R. Blank combined very well, and were too strong for the leading Otago pair, who could not keep up with their 73, excellent figures for a Foursome. In the Singles the games were very even also, and in many of the matches the result was in doubt till the last two or three holes. P. H. N. Freeth and J. A. Scouler went to the nineteenth before their gama was settled. Otago could only win two of the matches, T. B. Ferguson, beating E.J. Pumphrey and S. < E. Field winning from M. H. Godby, and thus being the only Otago player to win both his games. The visitors were slightly out of touch with the greens, and in many matches this was the deciding factor. The Otago team was welcomed at lunch by the president of the Christchurch Club, Mr Norton Francis, who apologised for the unavoidable absence of the captain, Sir Cyril Ward. He said that he hoped to see all" the team present at the national championships in October. Dr K. Ross replied. for Otago. The results of the games were:— ,' HANMER SHIELD. j , Otago. ■;■',.
