CAVERSHAM The Caversham Harriers held the animal Brighton-Green Island road race for the Cuthbertson and Bretell Cups under boisterous weather conditions. The limit man, J. Emmerson, was followed at intervals by the other competitors until the scratch men. Colston, Austin, and Lemon, left Bmin later. The front-markers, aided considerably by a strong, following win«£ opened up a big lead, making the task of the back-markers exceedingly hard. S. T. George, last year’s marathon winner, retired at three miles, and was followed by G. R. Colston. At the halfway bridge, Dever, running easily, had 20 yards lead* from Garland and Cox, . and others in good positions were Darling (last year’s winner), Cummings, Gerrie, and Williams. The back-markers were closing up and were catching C. W. Frye (Imm 45sec). The order at the last hill was: Dever, Garland, Cox, and Cummings, while Austin had dropped Lemon at this stage. Coming on to tar seal Garland took the lead; and, running easily, won by 200 yards from Dever. Cummings finished fast, and headed Cox for third place. The first scratch man home, Austen, was seventeenth. Result: C,'Garland (6min 15sec) 1, J. Dever (6min 45sec) 2, J. Cummings (smin SOsec) 3. Fastest time: G. L. Austin (sor) 1, L. Lemon (scr) 2, C. Frye (Imin 45sec) 3. MORNINGTON In spite of the rough weather there was a good attendance of members at the • Mornington Club’s run from the NorthEast Valley School. The main pack, under Deputy Captain Burton, proceeded up the hill behind the Post Office, through .bush on to Signal Hill road. This was followed for some distance, tfhen the pack took to the paddocks which led to the Trig Station. From, here the trail led down through the bush' on the harbour side of the hill, the pack eventually reaching the road some distance below the Mala station. The return to the school was made by the road to Logan Park and through the track at the back of the Gardens. Graveson and Munro * opened up a good lead on the run- back and led home from Maitland, the rest of the‘pack being, spread out for some“distance. Tati road pack, under, Deputy Captain Taylor, followedthe North .road back to the Gardens and through',, the track to Diindag'.street, and 'On to the port road. A steady ..pace was kept on the run down and a rest was called some dißtance Maia. Here the pack turned and seiyoffvfbr home. Hall quickly opeded up a dead from Pullaf, with Sanders third and Taylor .and Webster together, fourth. This order was maintained to Logan Park, where Sanders had a leads,pfe 100 yards which he maintained to the hut. Hall had moved un into second place -when the North road was reached and finished in this place a short distance ahead of Pullar. Taylor and •Webster, finished together some distance further back. ■ / - UNIVERSITY The University Harrier Club held its annual, Club Championship on Saturday afternoon oyer- the championship course at Wingatui. In conjunction with this event the trial for the team to represent the Otago University at the Inter- : University College Cross-country Championships .was held. The club was fortunate in being able to run the event between two severe hail 'showers, and dyer a course that. was in good condition in spite of recent rain. The first • seven .places were W. A. Stewart, M. JL. Robinson, J. Borrie,. G. A. Smith, L. W. Woods, and W. A. Pullar. V LEITH • Twenty-four runners attended the Leith Club’s run, which was held from Jamie-son-Hall, Maori Hill. The road pack was controlled by Deputy Captain Anderson, and a good solid run was held, the trail commencing along Highgate and down the Bullock Track into Woodhough. Malvern street was followed to its end, and the pack continued up Leith Valley in the teeth of a gale until the: school was reached. From, here the steep road .leading to Ross Creek reservoir was followed, and passipg the reserve ,the trail Ted fpi ■ the'V’vVakari’ Church.'' ’Here the trailbranched,, and upon striking Balmacewen road led past"the golf links and up Sinn • street home. No run, home was held. .Captain Masters led, the slow pack down', Balmacewen road till the small road branching to the right was reached 'and followed'it : for a 1 short distance. A, .shrift’ cut across the paddocks and past the power line ultimately led to the short cat to Flagstaff, and this was , climbed .at,.a.steady, pace; Upon reaching a high level the' pack angled back across thefields’near Ashburn' Hall-and on to the North Taieri road; 1 following this road -into •"Kaikorar Valley. Oban street" led 'to -Highgate, and a short run home resulted in Captain Masters being - first, followed by F. Butler. . x HANOVER BAPTIST Rough climatic conditions prevailed when 10 keen members set out from Port Chalmers to make their way to Dunedin. Leaving Port Chalmers at 3.20, the small pack made a steady pace up the hill, then down through-.the Sawyers’ Bay yards, where the pack was well spread out. At the top of the Green Hill the pack again! bunched! together, made their way over the hard bitumen road. Some . good stretches of road were covered at a fair pace. Coming near to Maia a very strong head wind was encountered which made the going very difficult.’ Passing the fertiliser works a driving shower of sleet made the pack seek shelter for a time: Setting off again, the pack made their own pace Up Union street then along Leith street. ; V ./ NORTHERN . The Three-mile Championship of the Northern Club was contested at St. Hilda under boisterous weather conditions, the high wind marring times. The course started at the Scouts’ Hall and travelled south for about 300 yards. A deviation was then made along a side street to Lovers’ lane, which was. followed through to the Anderson’s Bay cemetery. From here the road skirting Tahuna Park was traversed back to the finishing point at Onslow House. A good field was lined up.iy the startef (Mr R. Andrews), who despatched the contestants to an excellent start. From the eun N. R. Jefferson and R. Mackenzie went to the front, Jefferson having the misfortune to over-run the

turning into Lovers’ Lane. At the pavilion D. Fincham had assumed the lead, closely followed by H. Mackenzie and B. Ha ugh. With the following wind the field moved along at a great pace, B. Haugh was running strongly, and at the Cemetery was running with D.. Fincham, the remainder running in a bunch about 100 yards behind. D. Fhicham went on to win by 60 yards from B. Haugh, A. Fraser, L. Kerr, and R. Mackenzie fighting out a close finish to finish in that order. Result: D. Fincham 1, B. Haugh 2, A. Fraser 3, L. Kerr 4. Time, 16min 44sec. Sealed Handicap: C. Knox, 17min 32sec (3.30), 1; L. Kerr, 17mm 25Jsec (2), 2; N. R. Jefferson, 17min 44sec (Imin 40sec), 3. CIVIL SERVICE The Anderson Cup Five-mile Handicap Road Race was run over a course at St. Hilda. Leaving the St. Hilda terminus, a course was followed along the track through the Anderson’s Bay Cemetery, and back along Tainui road to the starting point, the circuit being covered twice. The course was in good order, but the runners had a strong head wind on the way back to the terminus. Twenty-three competitors faced the starter (Mr J. Hay], the limit men being followed by the scratch man (L. C. M'Lachlan) 4min 45sec later. T. Toner, off 4min 3pseo, quickly took the lead, and at the Cemetery was leading from the limit men, followed by J. Hollands, F. Williams, A. Adam, and S. Rose, the backmarkers not having made much impression on the leaders. These positions were maintained for the first lap, except that the backmarkers, Anderson, M'Millan, and Asher, had closed up the gap. Toner held the lead until the road was reached the second time, when Adam took the lead and went on to win from J, Hollands, who beat. Toner for second place. Placings:—A.' Adam (3min SOsec) 1, J. Hollands (3min 20sec) 2, T. Toner (4min 30sec) 3. Fastest times:—S. Asher, 27min 4?eec, 1; S. Anderson, 27min 56sec, 2; J. Hollands, 28min 15eec, 3. The winner’s time was 29min 37sec.

Under A. Kirkwood the juniors had a steady non-stop run to the Tomahawk School and back, the track through the lupins being followed to the Cemetery and the road. for. the remainder of the run. I. Hferhisoh; A. ; Kirkw6od> ;and R. Spfackett were all running well.
