RETURNED SOLDIERS
APPEAL FOR WORK A SATISFACTORY RESPONSE A report that there had been an extremely satisfactory response to the campaign recently launched with the object of securing employment for returned soldiers was submitted to the council of the Dunedin Chamber of Commerce last night by Mr C. B. Barrrowclough. Mr Barrowclough said that in the main the response to the appeal had been extremely satisfactory, but the real effects would not be seen for some time. The claims of returned men to employment would be borne in mind as a consequence of the campaign. The canvassing of the business community had not been the total of the work done. It had become apparent at conferences and committee meetings that there was a large avenue open for the employment of men in carrying out odd jobs and temporary work, but it was difficult to obtain a suitable organisation to take advantage of this opening. A central committee had been set up to consider the matter, and the scheme which it had before it was the compiling of a list of reputable and trustworthy men and the formation of a corps with headquarters at the Returned Soldiers’ Association rooms. It would be possible for anyone who had temporary work to telephone the Returned Soldiers’ Association and obtain the services of a man who would be guaranteed as reliable. If the work could be organised in this way a number of men would be given reasonably permanent employment. He wished to thank the commercial community for its assistance and particularly Mr G. Adess, to whose efforts the success of the effort were largely due. “It is cheering to receive such a report,” said the chairman (Mr J. C. Begg), who expressed appreciation of the assistance given by the Rotary Club.
