PORT CHALMERS NEWS

METHODIST MEMORIAL CHURCH

The ninety-fifth anniversary of the Port Chalmers Methodist Memorial Church Was celebrated by special services on Sunday. The Rev. E. T. Cox preached at the morning service, and the Rev. T. A. Pybus conducted the choral service in the evening. Special reference was made at both services to the excellent work of the Otago pioneers. The pioneer pastor of the church was the Rev. James Watkin, who formed the Methodist Mission in 1840. He was followed by the Rev. Charles Reed, who preached at Port Chalmers—then known as Koputai—in 1845. The president of the Port Chalmers Old Identities’ Association (Mr J. Jackson Purdie) attended the evening service on Sunday.
