THE TOTALISATOR RETURNS Again this year the totalisator investments for National Week at both the trots and the gallops increased considerabh —by £21,084 10s in the case of the gallops .and by £283 for the trots, a total of £21,307 10s. „ An analysis of the returns for the nrst two days of the gallops shows that the place machine was more popular with the public than the win machine. The place system drew £42,514 10s for the two daje and the win system £32,543 10s, The comparative figures for last year were £38,011 and £26,173 respectively. The investments at the trotting meeting were: — Thisvr. Lastyr. Day. £ £ Saturday .. .... 21,1784 20,750 Wednesday 25,3124 26,702 Friday .. .. .. .. 26,061 24,817 Totals 72,552 72,269 On only one day did the returns decrease, the first day showing an increase of £428 10s and the third day £1244. AUCKLAND, August 19. “After having been abandoned for two years on account of the depression, racing in Fiji is now better than ever,” said Mr D. B. Costello, honorary secretary of the Suva Racing Club, upon his arrival by the Niagara from Suva. "The object of my visit is to buy six to eight racing mares for various owners in. Suva,” Mr Costello continued. “ I am not wanting, first-class horses, but just those that are not good enough to be winning in Auckland. We abandoned racing about four years ago in Suva on account of the low price of copra. Two years ago we started up again. lam now beginning the Ba Racing Club, 20 miles from the Tavua goldfields. The first meeting will be held there on September 14. The traSk is a mile in length.”
