CITY COUNCIL

FORTNIGHTLY MEETING The fortnightly meeting of the Dunedin City Council was held last night. The Mayor (the Rev. E. T. Cox) presided, and there were also present: Crs Jones, M'Millan, Munro, Silverstone, Begg, Scott, Allen, Mitchell, Cameron, Neilson and Batchelor. Cr Batchelor was appointed to represent the council on the committee of the Vocational Guidance Association for the ensuing 12 months. * TRAMWAYS COMMITTEE The report of the Tramways Committee was submitted by Cr Jones, who, in reply to questions, said it was proposed to bring down a full report on the possible cost of the Anderson’s Bay tramway extension as soon as possible. The report was adopted. LIBRARY COMMITTEE Cr Neilson moved the adoption of the Library Committee’s report. Cr M'Millan said he understood that there were several employees at the Library who had been on the pay sheet for a number of years and who were still only temporary workers. Would the chairman look into the matter with a view to having d the staff properly classified? Cr Neilson said that the committee / had been merely following the usual practice, but he would look into the question. The report was adopted. WORKS COMMITTEE The report of the Works Committee was submitted by Cr Munro, who drew the attention of councillors to the manner in which paving work on city streets was being prosecuted by the council. The report was adopted. OTHER COMMITTEES The reports of the General, Gas and Reserves and Water Committees were Adopted without discussion. TENDERS Tenders were received for the supply of 300 desapped hardwood poles for the Electric Power and Lighting Department, but they were referrerd back to the committee with a view to having the suitability of the Tasmanian product reported upon. The tender of the Dunedin Demolition Company of £l2 12s for an unoccupied dwelling at Highcliff was accepted.
