TAKING OFF. The seven machines alighted with no mishan, and in turn disappeared out of sight. Some time later four of them appeared again on the Might deck, raised in turn bv the rear lift. They were placed in line and when pilots and passengers were on board, propellers began to revolve, and at intervals of a minute they were off again on their aerial journey. Taking off seemed an easier undertaking than alighting. A man lay beside each chock of the wheels until the signal was given by an officer with a flag. Chocks were drawn away, propellers roared into full power, the machines shot forward, and long before .they had reached the end of the run the wheels had left the deck A few moments later each plane had shot a hundred feet into the air and had wheeled off on its journey. When the four machines had left, the great ship gathered speed once more, turned out of the line of the wind and headed for its station in the Solent. Captain J. S. M. Ritchie, previously of Dunedin, who was in command of H.M.S. Diomede during 1925-27 in New Zealand, is now in command of the Furious. He was gazetted captain in 1923, so that he is now one of the senior captains nearing flag rank. His officers are a mixture of naval men and Royal Air Force men. Naval officers spend three years with the Air Force and return to the Navy, while a wing commander and equipment officers of the Air Force have periods of three vears’ service on the aircraft carriers. and a number of other R.A.F. officers have more temporary positions on board. This reciprocity of the two services seems to be carried on in all harmony.
