Ministerial, The Acting Prime Minister, Sir Alfred Ransom, accompanied by his private secretary, My A. W. Mulligan, arrived in Dunedin yesterday afternoon from the north and is staying at the Grand Hotel. He addressed a meeting in the Concert Chamber of the Town Hall last night, and will leave for the north again this morning, after receiving a deputation from the Otago Expansion League on the subject of the Haast Pass road. • The Minister of Education and Minister of Employment (Mr S. G. Smith) passed through Dunedin yesterday en route to Invercargill, accompanied by the deputy chairman of the Unemployment Board (Mr W. Bromley). The Minister will leave Invercargill on Friday to visit the Western districts, and will arrive in Dunedin on Saturday. He will remain here over the week-end, and on Monday and Tuesday will receive deputations concerning education and unemployment matters. Mr Smith will probably leave for the north again on Wednesday. The Minister of Agriculture (Mr C._E. Macmillan), who is at present in Christchurch, expects to remain there until the epd of the week.

Mr F. Waite, M.L.C., travelled by yesterday’s express from Balclutha to Oamaru.

H. \ying, provincial organiser of the Democrat Party, left for Invercargill and Riverton by the first express yesterday. Mr 0. M. Richardson, of the Dunedin Customs Department, jvho has been transferred to Wellington, was a passenger by yesterday’s express lor the north. Mr H. Holland, M.P., who is a patient in the Lewisham Hospital, Christchurch, is reported to be making a satisfactory recovery from the injuries ho received in a recent accident. v Mr E. S. Austin, of the Tourist Department, Wellington, who has been transferred to Melbourne, is visiting Dunedin. lie is accompanied by Mrs Austin, who is staying at Wain’s Hotel. The Public Trust Oflice announces that Mr C. F. Shapcott, of the staff at the Wanganui office, has been appointed to the position of district accountant at Greymouth, in succession to Mr G. Gray, who has been granted extended leave of absence to enable him to travel overseas. At a meeting of the committee of the Otago Yacht and Motor Boat Association held .last night, the chairman (Air E. TMoller) referred to the death of Mr W. B. Lane and said that the sport had lost one of its best friends. Mr Lane had been a boating enthusiast for many years and had proved himself a good friend to the association. A motion of sympathy with the relatives was carried in the customary manner. * ,

A British Official Wireless message from Rugby states that Mr J. H. Jarrett, Attorney-general of the Bahamas, will be appointed Colonial Secretary of the Bahamas in succession to the Hon. C. C. F. Dundns. who is now chief secretary to Northern Rhodesia, and that Mr J. E. S. Merrick, Deputy Chief Secretary of Uganda, will be appointed Chief Secretary of Uganda in succession to Mr E. L. Scott.

At a special meeting of the Dunedin Returned Soldiers’ Association Executive Inst evening, the resignation of the president (Mr A. S. Falconer), who will contest the North Dunedin seat in the interests of the National Government at the general election, was received. The resignation was accepted, and the immediate past-president (Mr A. Thomas) was elected to fill the position of president until April next year. Dr Alexander M., Drennan, formerly professor of pathology, Otago University, later of Queen’s Institute University, Belfast, and now professor of pathology at Edinburgh University, arrived in Dunedin yesterday afternoon by the express from the north. He is the guest of Dr G, E. Hercus, and is making a holiday visit to the Dominion. Dr Drennan is president of one of the sections of the British Medical Association’s Congress, which is to be held at Melbourne in September.
