PENALTY OF CRIME

PRISONERS SENTENCED - (Per United Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH. August 14. In the Supreme Court the following prisoners were sentenced by the Chief Justice: — Laurence Vanham Bound, carnal knowledge, 18 months’ probation. Edgar Robert Marsha’ 1 ., bigamy, two years’ hard labour. Hilton Parish, theft, forgery and uttering, 12 months’ probation. Eric Janies Winmill, cattle stealing, 12 months’ probation. Turn Hinemata, forgery, 18 months’ probation. Sir Michael Myers remarked that it was a unique experience for him, and probably for most judges, to grant probation to four out of five prisoners-for sentence. In these cases the circumstances justified leniency, GISBORNE, August 14.

In the Supreme Court to-day Vivian Walters was found guilty of breaking and entering a Harbour Board shed and stealing 13,000 cigarettes and two cases of brandy. He was sentenced by Mr Justice Reed to 18 months’ reformative detention.

Albert Paranihi Kohuru, found guilty the previous clay of breaking and entering and theft,at Tikitiki, was sentenced fh two years in the Borstal. INVERCARGILL, August 14.

Pleading to-day for leniency for Jean Cartwright, who was found guilty of unlawfully using an counsel said she had a ( husband on relief work and a family of five, one eldest being 14 years of age. He suggested probation on st-.ingent conditions. Mr Justice Kennedy said a short,sentence would meet the case, and ordered reformative detention for eight montns
