OBITUARY

MR W.D. MILNE

The death of Mr William Dawson Milne occurred at his residence, Nelson street, East Gore, on Saturday. The deceased was born in 1850 and received his« education at Aberdeen. He took passage with his parents and other members of the family xm the ship Jessie Gilbert, which arrived at Bluff in May, 1865, after a voyage which lasted five months. The Milne family proceeded to luvercargill by wagon and spent the first night in the colony in a small hotel in Tay street, called the "Three Bells." The following day they journeyed to Woodlands, the family belongings being transported in bullock and horse-drawn vehicles. Mr Milne secured work with the New Zealand and Australian Land Company, ploughing on the Waihopai Downs ■ Station. He spent some years with the company, and later secured the position as anchorman while fresh areas of land were being broken up with the steam plough. Buying a team, he commenced road contracting work for a period, giving up his work -to join the railway construction gangs and assisting in laying down three miles of line passing through the Mataura township. He then secured the appointment of manager of the Bayswater the Western district. Some years later the deceased returned to road .work, and finally acquired a farm at Waimumu in 1883, which he worked until his retirement to Gore. He is survived by a widow, four daughters and four sons, viz., Mrs R. Knibbs (M'Nab), Mrs W. Reynolds (Christchurch), Misses Annie and Margaret (Gore), John (Whiter ig), Thomas (Dunedin), Robert and William (Gore). There are 10 grandchildren. The funeral took place at the Gore Cemetery on Tuesday, the services, being conducted by the Rev. R. Mackie.
