OBITUARY

GEORGE WILLIAM RUSSELL (United Press AssociatlSn) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) LONDON, July 17.

The death is announced of George William Russell, the Irish writer and

painter; aged 68 years. He was editor or the Irish Statesman from 1923 to 1930. THE REV. P. J. MAIRS (Pee United I'bess Association) FOXTON, July 18. The .death occurred at Foxton this morning of the Rev. Peter John Mairs, aged 71, a former well-known minister of the Primitive Methodist Church, who was stationed in the Taranaki, Wai-' kato, Denniston, and Rjanawatu districts.

GODFREY A. SIMMONDS (From Our Own Correspondent.) (By Air Mail) - LONDON, June 29. The death is announced of Mr Godfrey Addis Simmonds, at the age of 64. Mr Simmonds, who was born at Warrnambool, Victoria, entered the Union Steam Ship Company in Wellington 33 years ago. Shortly afterwards, he was appointed private secretary to the managing director (Mr—now Sir —James Mills) at Dunedin'. Later, He came to England with his chief, and was placed in charge of the Glasgow office of the Union Company. After about two years in Glasgow he was appointed secretary to the London board of till company, which has offices at 138 Leadenhall street. .Hi; held this position for 20 years until 1932, when he retired, but was appointed a member of the London Board of Directors. Recently he had been living at Hove. He entered a nursing home for an operation for an internal complaint, but died shortly after the operation from haemorrhage. The funeral was at West Norwood Crematorium yesterday. Mr Simmonds, who was. a bachelor, was a very kindly and courteous man, and very much liked by all who came in contact with him. He lived a very quiet life and took no active part in public, life outside his work. For a number of years, however, •he was a prominent member of a South London golf club.
