UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF
LOCAL ACTIVITIES NATIONAL UNEMPLOYED WORKERS. The 'first meeting of delegates of the National Unemployed Workers' Movement was held on Tuesday evening, when there was a good attendance representing various groups. Mr G. Dale acted as chairman, and outlined the reasons for having these meetings. The question of issuing an unemployed bulletin was referred back for consideration at the next meeting. It was agreed that each group or job be represented by a delegate for every 10 men. It was resolved that the delegates form themselves into a committee and appoint a chairman and a secretary. Mr A. Cruiekshank was elected chairman, and Mr F. M'Conph secretary. It was arranged to hold the next meeting before the general meeting. The general meeting of the Dunedin Central branch was held on Wednesday evening, when there was a good attendance. Mr M. Silverstone (president) occupied the chair. Reports from deputations that attended the City Council, Anti-War and Fascism, and mock parliament meetings were received. The Social Committee gave a satisfactory statement on the dances held in the Trades Hall every Friday, which was received. The monthly financial statement was submitted by the secretary, and this showed the branch to be in a very satisfactory position. Two delegates were appointed to attend the forthcoming Anti-War Conference, which is to be held in Dunedin. It was agreed to ask Dr M'Millan to attend the next general meeting on July 30. The Propaganda Committee was given power to start open-air street speaking if the weather was favourable. The secretary intimated that arrangements were well in hand for the special entertainment for the unemployed, in the Early Settlers' Hall on August 0, and that the Puketeraki Maori' Juvenile Party had agreed to attend. The secretary was instructed to take up a large number of group complaints with the local authorities, and also the issue of coal from the Mayor's Relief Committee. The issuing of an unemployed bulletin was held in abeyance until the next meeting. The chairman announced that a debate had been arranged for Sunday evening, the subject being " That the Douglas Credit Method is the Only Method of Solving Unemployment," and he asked all present to attend. A WHANGAREI PROTEST LOWER RATES OF RELIEF PAY. (Pee United Press Association) WHANGAREI, July ,18. A public meeting convened by the Whangarei Unemployed Workers' Association last night unanimously carried the following resolution: — " That .this meeting of citizens vigorously protests against the injustice of paying the unemployed in this district a lower rate than those in the larger towns, and points out to the Minister that the more attractive conditions in the cities are having a serious effect on the balance of population in country centres." The chairman of the association said he would hold meetings weekly if necessary until the demands were met. The Deputy Mayor, who presided, gave his assurance of the continued support of the Borough Council, and a similar promise was given by the Chamber of Commerce, which is taking the matter up with the Minister. The Rev. Mr Steele (Anglican) and Father Herring vigorously espoused the men's cause.
