The Taumata Institute met in the school on Saturday, Miss C. Hamilton presiding. Themotto was "He prayeth well who loveth well both man and bird and beast." For the roll call a number of useful pudding recipes were exchanged. One of J. M. Barrie's plays was read. Miss -I. Carruthers gained first place and Mrs A. Carruthers second in the competition "A Pot of Marmalade." The hostesses were Mrs R. Lawrence and Miss E. Carruthers. ~> * * * Kaka Point Institute held its July meeting in the hall, Mrs Rein presiding. The roll call was "Sing, Say, or Penny Pay," and the motto "Happy are tljose. .wjio.; don't ..want .the,- things . they "caiT'get.P-■ A competition, "Best Decorated Butter Sponge," resulted as follows: —MrB Thurlow 1, Mrs Bichan 2, and Mrs Rowley 3. The hostesses were Mrs T. J. Murray and Misses Mosley and Milne. The institute held.a fancy dress ball on July 10. Mr W. Bates and Mr D. Tilson were M.C.'s. The prizes were won as' follows:—Ladies (fancy), Miss Gladys Thompson (early Victorian); gentlemen, Mr W. Sim (old-fashioned gentleman) • Original: Ladies, Miss B.Milne (Plunket baby); gentlemen, Mr A.Bichan (mother of Plunket baby). A statue waltz was won by Mrs Sim and partner.

The Green Island Institute met in the Masonic Hall on Tuesday evening. Mrs Wflkie' (president), presided. Mrs Talbot' congratulated the members of the Dramatic Circle on their success at the recent Community Drama Festival, held at Mosgiel. Congratulations were also received from Mrs Cooksley on »behalf of the federation and from Mr D. Miller, secretary of the Green Island Band. Two demonstrations were given—one by Mrs H. Kane on " Raffia Trays," and one by Mrs A. Callendar on " Rugtmaking." A successful "Bring and Buy" was held. Mrs J. L. Miller read the introduction to the study of "Women in English Economic History." A competition, was arranged by the Social Committee. Hostesses were Mesdames Wilkie, Bulger, Penson, W. 0. Smellie, W. Miller and Gardiner.

The Pukekoma Women's Institute met in the Hillend Hall last Thursday afternoon, when Mrs* Cunningham presided. Mrs Ayson, president of the Otago Federation, gave a talk on "The Origin of the Women's Institute and Its Developments all Over the World." Specimens of handwork collected from various institutes throughout Otago were handed round for inspection. The motto was "No one is useless in this world who lightens the burden of it for someone else,' and the roll call "My Silliest Mistake." In the competition for " Something made from a cardboard box," the winners were Miss M. Hallunj 1, Mrs Cunningham 2, and Mrs MorgaJ 3, and for " Best bar of homemade soap, Mrs Hallum 1, Mrs Smith 2, and Mrs Cunningham 3. Mrs Smith presented a small gift and posy of flowers to Mrs Morgan, the first president, and to Mrs* Little, the first secretary. Mrs Smith and Miss Rutherford were hostesses.

The Paretai Women's Institute met in the school on Saturday. The motto, "Good, better, best, never let it rest, till your good is better," and your better best," was followed with the roll call, " Where I get my best view in the district." In the senior- section, competition for " Best refooted stocking," Mrs Dippie was first, Mrs Rumney second, and Mrs J. Aitkenhead third. In the junior section, which was for " The best worked cushion," Miss R. Drake was first, Miss M. Dippie second, and Miss V. Prentice third. Mrs Drake and Misses E. Scott and R. Drake were hostesses. Mrs Caldwall, of Puerua, gave a demonstration on " Brush Matmaking." Miss A. Mercer demonstrated "The Making of Puff Pastry."
