BALCLUTHA " Movie " Ball \ highly successful " movie " and poster ball was held on Wednesday night ill aid of the -Mayor's Relief Fund tor unemployed. About 150 couples were present, and the takings umounted to over £4O. Novelty costumes were.not so plentiful as last year, Hut there were some striking poster effects. " The Mayor (Mr D. T. Fleming), said it was very pleasing to see such a line gathering at the third annual ball, and referred to the substantial amounts that had been raised in this way for the Relief Fund. The takings from, the ball would- enalJie the Relief Committee to five a measure of help to those in need, anl on behalf of the committee he acknowledged with thanks the response to the appeal that had been made. He also expressed appreciation of the valued work done bv the committee, and particularly the chairman (Mr D. M. Henderson). Special mention was also made of Mr James Mitchell for the free use of the theatre, and all the others who had assisted in making the ball a success. • • Water Supply Improvement The Mayor and members of the council held a conference yesterday with Mr Davies, the contractor for, the new waterworks at Milton, in connection with the proposed waterworks improvement scheme for Balelutha. School Committee At the monthly meeting of the Lawrence District High School Committee the rector (Mr Smith) reported that the primary roll number was 134 and the secondary roll was 34. On July 4 the school was visited by a deputation of Otago Education Board officials and members, and a number of lojaJ requirements were laid before them. The Young Helpers' League held a social afternoon, and the box opening totalled £2 17s 8d for 11 members. Eileen Goodlet and John Christophers qualified for prizes. Nurse Kemp had arrived, and had opened the dental clinic for two months. —The report was considered very satisfactory. The secretary reported, a credit balance of £46 8s Bd. It was decided to bring the merit board up to date, as this had been overlooked for some years A line coloured picture of the King and Queen was given by an anonymous donor, and it was decided to have it framed and hung in the school.

Queen'Carnival The Ex-pupils' Social Club held an enjoyable evening on Monday, and staged; a " Mad-hatters' Night" on behalf of its queen. Mrs Edgar won the ; prize 'with an unusual design of a hen s nest for a hat. with a live buff bantam sitting in it. The Civic Queen Committee held a sports meeting on- Wednesday, which proved very interesting. All committees are working hard' for their respective queens. The social queen's flag has dominated the position the last week. Girl Guides

The annual report of the Lawrence Girl Guides' Company shows that it has made good progress since its inception. The number of Guides totals 22, of which 20 are second class and two tenderfoot. The trip made by 18 Guides to Dunedin was voted a wonderful experience. Ihe receiDts amounted to £lB 13s 9d, and expenditure £l2 18s, leaving a credit balance of £6 0s 9d.

Lodge Meeting The Lawrence Lodge of the. United Ancient Order of Druids.held its fortnightly meeting on- Tuesday last, when a large attendance of, brothers was present. A visit was received from the Grand Lodge officers and Board of Management from Dunedin. A.D. Bro. G. W. Bartlctt presided. One new member was proposed, and,, after the usual routine .business was'disposed 0f,.,-Grand' President; Bro: Hunt, "Grand Vice-president Bro.: Johnston, Grand Treasurer Bro. Bro. Racoss. and P,A. Badminton , ; f ."■■' Following an enthusiastic meeting held on Tuesday evening it was- decided to form a badminton club in Ranfurly. For a commencement games will be played once a week in the Ranfurly Hall, and the opening night will be held next Friday at 8 o'clock. The club is providing rackets, shuttles and all necessary gear. WAIMATE Borough Council Meeting A deputation representing residents of Opie street waited on the Waimate Borough Council, at its fortnightly meeting, to urge the necessity of further channelling in that street. After the deputation had been heard the Mayor • (Mr G. Dash) informed the members that thenrequest would be borne in mind. The council' had adopted a programme of channelling in that area, and he did npt think any other section would receive preference. '',.", ■•- An application, made by Messrs Hamilton and Fitch on behalf of Mr W. C. Simon, Oamaru, for a second-hand dealers license, was referred to the police for a report. The clerk was instructed to' issue a license if the report ..were satisfactory. The General Committee recommended that notice be served on the owner of ii property in Shearman street to effect the repairs enumerated by the health inspector within 14 days, failing which a closing order would be served.

High Schools' Rugby In a Rugby football match between the first fifteens of the Waimate High School and Kurow District High School Waimate ran out the winner by 17 points to 3.
